Young Women Pause for Peace at the Meditation Museum

When volunteers at the Meditation Museum in Silver Spring, MD were asked to host a tour and workshop for a camp of young women through Howard University, they were delighted to say yes.  Then they learned the theme of the camp was 'Mind, Body, Spirit,' and it was clear that the girls were coming to the right place.  Sister Jenna, director of the Meditation Museum, welcomed them on Thursday afternoon, and asked them what they noticed when they entered the space.  "Peace" and "Quiet" were a couple of the youth's observations.  She then referred to the framed virtues and their descriptions on the wall as visitors walk up the stairs to the Museum, and pointed out that "Meditation helps us to notice the important things that are around us."

After listening to an overview of the usefulness of meditation to wake up our own inner power and re-connect to a greater source of energy, the girls experimented with relating to each other from this revised vantage point of goodness and light.  They watched a short video on the benefits of incorporating meditation into our daily routines as a process of re-charging and serving as a positive presence to others.  Their optional follow-up assignment was to create a representation of what the world would look like if they were living from their light within.  They finished their visit with an Indian dance lesson, engaging their bodies in the expression of spirituality.

Customary as guests leave a program at the meditation museum, Sister Jenna presented the campers and their dedicated counselors with gifts by which to remember their visit, including a sticker which stated, "Speak sweetly. Speak quietly. Speak less."
