ALS Awareness Night at Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals will host ALS Awareness Night on July 6, 2012 at Nationals Park in conjunction with third baseman Ryan Zimmerman receiving the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award for his service throughout the community. The first pitch will be thrown at 7:05pm against the Colorado Rockies.

The ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter will be on site during the game and a person living with ALS (PALS) will be on the field prior to the first pitch with ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter Executive Director Ronnie Gunnerson during the awards ceremony for Zimmerman. The Lou Gehrig Memorial Award will be presented by Phi Delta Theta International. The Lou Gehrig Memorial Award is the only official award in Major League Baseball that is given by a fraternity. The ALS Association is the National Philanthropy of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity for chapters on campuses across the United States. Lou Gehrig, for whom the disease is named, was a member of Phi Delta Theta at Columbia University in 1925. Lou Gehrig passed away from ALS on June 2, 1941 after a two-year battle with the disease.
