SPEAK OUT: 'Mermaids' Film on Discovery Sparks Questions

A Discovery Channel documentary about the existence of mermaids has people talking, and not just about mermaids.

If you’re heading to the ocean for vacation, you might be on the lookout for more than the usual sea creatures. And, we're not talking about the typical summer shark scare.

Mermaids made a recent splash – no pun intended – this week when the Discovery Channel aired its documentary, Mermaids: The Body Found, which originally was shown May 27.

Currently, the search term “mermaid body found” is No. 1 on Google Trends with over 100,000 searches, but USA Today reports that the scene in which a mermaid’s body is found by a young boy was staged.

The Discovery Channel, which is headquartered in Silver Spring, is known as “the world’s #1 nonfiction media company,” according to its website.

The show’s website asks: “What if there’s a kernel of truth that lives beneath the legend of the mythical mermaid?”

However, an editor’s note provides the disclaimer that “this two-hour special is science fiction based on some real events and scientific theory.”

It appears not everyone read that part, or they chose to ignore it.

“I honestly think it is selfish of people to think we are the only human creatures on earth," one YouTube viewer commented, according to CNN. “There is stuff out there we can’t explain.”

Keeley Belva, a spokesperson for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told CNN that the organization had recently received questions about the existence of mermaids, which she attributes, in part, to the release of the documentary.

NOAA recently published a statement on its website saying there is no evidence that “aquatic humanoids” have ever existed.

But, CNN reported that John Athanson, the public relations manager for Weeki Wachee (otherwise known as the “City of Live Mermaids”) Springs State Park near Tampa, believes mermaids are real.

"If you ask me, (mermaids) do exist," Athanson told CNN. "They exist, and they exist right here in Weeki Wachee."

So what do you think? Did you watch the documentary? Is it possible the mysterious, mythical creatures do exist? Tell us in comments.

Really if you don't believe that a species could evolve in a multitude of ways your just plain ignorant. There are may species of bear that are from the same gene pool as well as birds, cats and dogs, ect. Just stay in you little bubble and close your eyes if it makes you feel better but for those of use who are looking for something more than just the daily retinue of life and some discovery of the bigger picture please don't go and add your negative energy to something that neither of us knows the whole truth about.

Wow, these comments are great, I am a questioning individual and many of you have strong arguments. I think it is human nature to be arrogant, which is why we are not ones to readily accept something other than what we were taught. However, the bible is not proven, nor does anyone have scientific proof or a photo of god. That is called blind faith, I don't know factually if god exists but, I choose to believe. I also chose to believe that perhaps myths come from some sort of truth. I don't know of anyone who parted a sea, nor saw a mermaid, but i'm open to believing.

Great fun good entertainment , I can't believe people are actually debating if the documentary is real.

The documentary was sci-fi based on scientific theories. Discovery Channel aired one about DRAGONS, years ago. Very entertaining sci-fi, too. Do you remember? Now, remember those old guys who made those big drawings on corn fields and had a lot of fun after the rumors of spaceships landing spread out? People may believe whatever crazy staff they hear, as long it is reasonable and convincing: ghosts, whitchs, ufo's, big foot, you name it. It's a personal choice and having access to info and science doesn't make us more rational than we were centuries ago. This case would render a great research on mass action in Sociology.

I've just seen this show for the first time and have also read through these comments. I reserve judgement on whether I think mer-people are real or not because I did see some very interesting ancient drawings in the show. It's well documented in history that sailors across the world the world saw similar things to each other and the Bloop noise (you can hear it properly through Google) very interesting indeed. However, the ridiculous footage of the two boys screamed fake and totally discredited the whole show. It seemed way too desperate. The CGI stuff was again desperate. The believeinmermaids website looks like it was set up to appear like it was blocked by the powers that be. Seriously, would you advertise you were blocking it if you were the government? Nope.

Interesting ! Whats more intriguing is that its a gov navy boy who poo poos it and then throws another smoke grenade to belittle it and lead u into being and idiot if u think its plausible !!!!! The navy had sea-lab before they went to the moon and apparently ended the programme supposedly as they put the money into nasa for the race to the moon ! Years later we found out that they'd kept it going on the side on a smaller less public scale ! Also the scotts have the legend of the kelpie !!! Ive spoken with peeps who believe it !! If in doubt dont reason it out !!!! Assumption pro or con is being an idiot either way ! If theres smoke there's fire!

I have been retired crom the Navy since 1996. Sometime around 1984 I took my father in law out on a fishing trip out of Mayport when the MWR had the deep sea fishing boat. About 8 miles that morning I saw what Appeared to be a head surface out of the water for about 5-8 seconds. I couldnt believe what I saw and didnt say anything for years until I saw this program. Once they showed the reconstructive head, it was as exactly as what I saw that morning. I'm not saying it was a mermaid, but I never had chill like that in my life until I saw that show. We all know the scientist on the film are actors, but, they are acting the role of the real scientists who were there. I'm really worried that my fellow humans still believe in Gods that we all know don't exist,. But can't believe in ancient hieroglyphics showing proof. Don't take my word for it, "Just Do The Research "
Dave May 27, 2013 at 08:28 AM
Not only are the scientists actors, but the good doctor's website URL, drpaulrobertson.com, is registered to Discovery Communications, LLC. Why would THEY register a domain for him? Additionally, the website displays a graphic stating that the website has been seized by the Department of Homeland Security. If that's the case, then: A) Why doesn't drpaulrobertson.com forward to a government server? B) Why is the ominous graphic actually hosted on the drpaulrobertson.com server and not a government server? C) Why does the "alt tag," the hidden alternate text for images, read "Mermaid legend is true, and there is proof of real live mermaids" instead of some government alt tag? If these actors are portraying real scientists, why do they keep referring to "autopsies?" Autopsies are for humans, forensic medical examinations for any other species are "necropsies." People believe in this garbage because they WANT to believe, despite their better instincts. BTC, any chance that head could have belonged to a seal or sea lion? I see "heads" pop out of the water all the time here in San Diego, and it's always well-known marine mammals that the noggins belong to. With people that believe this garbage, it's no wonder that Fox News is so popular with the denizens of the trailer parks...

I don't know about this dribble, not that I believe any of this dribble, and I will admit they display it all in an "OMG, look at them; They are so real!" sort of way. It's a bit cynical, the "Story" is cut with a huge dose of "Be a hero, save the ocean!". Sure that is a good message, no doubt about it, but stop promoting the unbelievable to make grown adults cast their votes about the world oceans'. If we need mermaids before we try to make our oceans better, than we are all pretty dumb... And for that, our oceans have been screwed from the get go. Really though, just cut it out with the "big bad brother" is trying to keep our mermaids to themselves. If the is what changed your mind about our waters, than you are a bad guy too.
earthworx May 28, 2013 at 05:02 AM
I guess some of these people also believed the alien autopsy on Fox was real.
HBOMB May 28, 2013 at 06:41 AM
Being a CG artist there is nothing in any of the "real" footage that looks like it wasn't done on a computer. I have no doubt had they gone to ILM or Winston studios no one would be able to tell. For example the producer on the Iron Man movies was saying to the CG artist that the armour didn't look real. The artist had to remind him he was looking at the dalies done with the real armour.
Matthew Hammer May 28, 2013 at 11:33 PM
I think they showed the documentary then the dumb ass government has started to try to Change our minds about it.
Becca Eubanks May 30, 2013 at 02:45 AM
They exist and always have. Humans are conditioned to believe what is told to them.
Chris crosby May 30, 2013 at 04:05 AM
What they have found and what the governments all over the world are covering up is the( ufo ) Alien and the mammal dolphin and seals have created... The Alien have mixed with the most intelligent species on earth... Look with your own eyes! Are you that blind.... I know it sounds funny but uts not... Ask dr. robertson...
Chris crosby May 30, 2013 at 04:11 AM
The end is closer now.... The Lord God is letting us see everything we thought wr knew... No stone will be left unturned.... Whats hidden will be revealed... An African American President and everything else you thought you'll never see.... Well its here... Including the mermaid... And what are they really and why is the devil trying to destroy them..
LOLA May 30, 2013 at 05:24 AM
I'm a believer. To make a long story short... Obviously there is another species among us. I feel there is no need to hide it. All living things are connected in every way shape and form. All species no matter how large or small play an intrecit part in nature. It is our responsibility as human beings, who are are at the top of the "food chain" to preserve all life forms. In essence preserving our existence. Nuff said....

Open your eyes to possibility and watch the narrow scope of your gaze swell to an entire new world. Or... devour every last word of others as if its your last meal and starve mentally. If you're here then you're hungry. Period.
