Want to know what a crowd of half-a-million people looks like? Take Metro on the Fourth of July.
The Washington, DC area transit system said that it's expecting no less than 500,000 riders on Thursday, July 4 and will run extra trains to keep up with the influx.
Trains will operate at "near rush-hour" frequency from 6 p.m. to midnight to accommodate passengers traveling to the fireworks display on the Mall.
In a holiday service alert, Metro advised passengers to avoid Smithsonian and Federal Triangle stations to get to the events, but rather exit at other stations and walk from there. Smithsonian will be entry-only once the fireworks are done.
Metro suggests exiting at the following stations if you're planning to see the fireworks:
- Foggy Bottom for Orange or Blue line riders
- Metro Center for Red, Orange or Blue line riders
- Archives for Yellow or Green line riders
- Gallery Place for Red, Yellow or Green line riders
- Judiciary Square for Red Line riders
- Union Station for Red Line riders
- L’Enfant Plaza for Orange, Blue, Yellow or Green line riders
- Capitol South for Orange or Blue line riders
- Federal Center SW for Orange or Blue line riders
- Arlington Cemetery for Blue Line riders
