Pedestrian Safety Initiative Begins in Silver Spring

Unhappy with the state of pedestrian safety in the neighborhood?

Here's something you can do about it: Become a pedestrian safety volunteer.

Pedestrian safety volunteers help spread the word about how to be a safe pedestrian and how to drive without endangering pedestrians' safety.

"With help from MCDOT, the Montgomery County Police Department, and Fire and Rescue Service, in coordination with the Maryland Highway Safety Office, community volunteers have been participating in outreach efforts such as fairs, festivals and community meetings. They talk to pedestrians on the street and visiting community events, and [they] distribute reusable bags containing pedestrian safety information," according to the blog for the county's Pedestrian Safety Initiative.

The initiative started in Wheaton, and is about to spread to Bethesda and Silver Spring.

To become a pedestrian safety volunteer, attend one of the following training sessions:

• Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building (One Veterans Place, Silver Spring, MD 20910)
• Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Service Center (4805 Edgemoor Ln., Bethesda, MD 20814)
