Council Holds Hearings on Zoning Rewrite, Work Session on Bus Rapid Transit

What's going on this week with the Montgomery County Council that will affect Silver Spring.

Haven't had a chance to tell the county government what you think about the proposed changes to the county's zoning law?

The county council is holding public hearings this week—one on Tuesday, Nov. 12, the other on Thursday, Nov. 14, both at 7:30 p.m.—on the proposed changes to the zoning code, which hasn't been updated substantially since 1977. The hearings take place at the Montgomery County Council Office Building (100 Maryland Ave., Rockville).

Each night of the hearing will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, and Channel 30 on Verizon) and will be streamed through the county's website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov.

Learn more about the proposed changes at www.zoningmontgomery.org, which features an interactive map where one may compare existing and proposed zoning for every property in the county. "Clicking on a particular property will display the development standards (density, height limits and setbacks) for the existing and proposed zone," according to an email news release from the county council's office.

To testify at one of the hearings, calls 240-777-7803 by 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11. Or, submit written testimony or comments to: County Council, 100 Maryland Ave., Rockville, MD 20850, or email the council members at county.council@montgomerycountymd.gov.

Proposed bus rapid transit routes are on the agenda for the county council's meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12. At 1:45 p.m., the council holds its first work session on the Countywide Transit Corridors Functional Master Plan "to establish the routes [about 81 miles' worth] and possible station locations [about 101 stations are planned] of the proposed countywide Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system," according to an email news release from the county council's office.
