Nighttime Patching, Resurfacing of Georgia Avenue Starts Monday

Nighttime road work begins Nov. 18.

Georgia Avenue resurfacing in downtown Silver Spring starts Monday night, Nov. 18, and will last several weeks, according to an email statement from the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Weather permitting, mobile patching—which precedes the paving—begins this week. Work crews also are constructing roadway bus pads during weekends in the area, according to the SHA.

The work is part of an ongoing $3.6 million safety and resurfacing project on Georgia Avenue between Eastern Avenue and MD 390 (16th Street). If the weather cooperates, nighttime patching work should finish in late December.

Either northbound or southbound lanes of Georgia Avenue may be closed during the night, from Sunday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The work involves resurfacing nearly 60 locations along the 1.75-mile section of Georgia Avenue in downtown Silver Spring.

"Unfortunately, construction equipment can be loud and disruptive," Brian Young, SHA District 3 engineer, said in a statement. "Therefore, we thank residents and visitors for their patience as the District [3] works to improve road conditions on MD 97 for motorists and public transit users."
