Weekend Events: Take a Trip To DC

AFI Docs, Tony Hawk, Arrested Development and more this weekend, June 21-23.

AFI Docs 

The documentary film festival formerly known as Silverdocs runs through June 23. Films are showing at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, as well as at various locations in Washington, DC.

National Capital Barbecue Battle

What: Discover who will be crowned the “National Pork Barbecue Champion” during this two-day event on Pennsylvania Avenue between 9th and 14th streets. Sample more than 20 types of barbecue, while listening to dozens of bands, including The Wailers, Trouble Funk and EU.

When/Where/How Much? The battle runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $12 at the event, and are available online.

Innoskate

What: Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen and other skateboarding legends participate in The National Museum of American History’s Innoskate. Hawk will donate his first skateboard to the museum, as well as participate in panel discussions and trick demonstrations.

When/Where/How Much? 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday on the National Mall. Free.

Arrested Development

What: Not to be confused with the popular sitcom on Netflix, the band that won a Grammy for “Best New Artist” in 1993 has reunited and will play the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.

When/Where/How Much? 6 p.m. Saturday at the Kennedy Center. Tickets are free.

D.C. Bourbon Bash

What: A whiskey-themed bar crawl around Dupont Circle, featuring eight different bourbons at eight different bars. Food and other drink specials are also on tap.

When/Where/How Much? Noon to 10 p.m. Saturday beginning at Buffalo Billiards. Tickets are $55/$75 and are available on the DC Bourbon Bash website.

Fete de la Musique

What: Enjoy blues, Latin, jazz, folk and reggae music at the Malmaison restaurant on the Georgetown Waterfront. The event mimics the French national celebration of the arts where public spaces are taken over by performers.

When/Where/How Much?: 2 p.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday at Malmaison (3401 Water Street, NW Washington, DC). The event is free until 11 p.m., and $10 after that.
