Weigh In On Orioles vs. Nationals

The surprise success of the Orioles and Nationals has the region buzzing.

The Orioles and Nationals "rivalry" has required quotations through the first few years of interleague play around the beltway. This year is different. Entering the three-game weekend set, beginning Friday night at Nationals Park, the two clubs are battling atop their divisions against clubs with star-studded rosters and larger payrolls. So as one of the most important series between these neighboring ball clubs gets underway, the Patch sites in the Maryland area are curious: who are you pulling for in this year's Battle of the Beltway? Are you cheering for Bryce Harper and the Nationals? Or are you behind Adam Jones and the Orioles? While we're at it, which team do you think stands the best chance of staying in the pennant race late into …

I just got back from the game. What a night. The first surprise came at the ticket booth, where the cheapest seat still available was $27. I guess that's the downside of having meaningful baseball. Though the upside is that $27 seat was like 20 or so rows back in the lower deck. I'll take it. The crowd was really well-mixed and energetic. It was very friendly, not like hanging out with Yankees …   more ›

Orange Taxi Using Gas Savings to Recruit Drivers

Gasoline represents a substantial portion of their everyday expenses.

Written by: Dave Sutton Four-dollar-per-gallon gasoline has become an accepted reality in the Washington DC metro area. While $4-a-gallon gas is expensive for everyone, for taxi drivers it is exceptionally painful. Nearly all taxi drivers are contractors—thus, they are de facto small-business owners. Gasoline represents a substantial portion of their everyday expenses. As gas prices increase, each increase cuts directly into drivers’ take-home earnings. Orange Taxi estimates drivers using their vehicles will achieve 30 to 40 percent in fuel savings—which translates into more money in their pocket at the end of the day. “The typical taxi is a gas guzzler such as a Mercury Marquis or Ford Crown Victoria,” Robert Alexander, CEO of Orange …

Riderwood Residents Donate to Local Schools

The Riderwood Wildlife Habitat Project is certified under the Wildlife Habitat Council’s Wildlife At Work program

An Earth Day-themed used jewelry sale by Riderwood retirement community residents has sold a total of $1,162 which is being donated to support environmental education at two local public schools.   Strathmore Elementary School received half of the money to purchase special equipment for its “salad” garden. The other half was sent to Beltsville Academy in Prince Georges' County for environmental education and for an addition to its courtyard garden. Riderwood residents observe Earth Day every day of the year at their 120-acre campus through their wildlife habitat work. The Riderwood Wildlife Habitat Project is certified under the Wildlife Habitat Council’s Wildlife At Work program. This certification recognizes the partnership between …

Montgomery County Faces Teen Substance Abuse at 'Epidemic' Proportions

Teen substance abuse now is similar to the problems of 1993, when authorities were called to action to combat teen drinking and driving, police said.

A year ago this week Montgomery County was rocked by the loss of three Magruder High School students killed in a drunk driving accident. Now, activists say, it’s time for the community to wake up.  The Montgomery County Council of PTAs hosted a community action forum Wednesday, gathering police, community leaders, parents, teachers and students to discuss a growing substance and alcohol abuse problem in Montgomery County. “We are far too overrepresentive of drug and alcohol related tragedies. The number one cause of death continues to be alcohol related crashes and teen driving crashes,” said Captain Thomas Didone, director of the Montgomery County Police Traffic Division. “The summary of what’s going on with underage drinking – we’ve …

Not that it makes a huge difference but there were two girls killed in that wreck on River Road. Not three. Didone gets that wrong all of the time. I doubt seriously if there is any epidemic. its kids being teenagers. Yesterday six girls were found drinking in some woods near Great Seneca Hghwy. You would have thought it was the capture of John Dillinger. Kids are going to drink just like we …   more ›
