Mr. Gas Man, i will have to disagree with your statement "blacks commit more crimes.".Read More Yes, blacks and other minority populations are represented higher in arrests rates and subsequent convictions in the justice system. However, not all crime is reported, investigated, and or subjected to prosecution. A statement indicating that blacks Simply comitt more crime because they are arrested more is inherently flawed, since there is no definitive data as to the numbers of crimes committed, including both reported an unreported, crimes. Essentially, their is no way for any one to know for sure. "dark figure of crime."

Wheaton's crime is pretty bad. My phone was stolen in that place. I totally agree with you.

So how was this guy identified and apprehended? Would be nice to know if there was photoRead More surveillance in the elevator and/or the garage itself since many of us here in Takoma Park use the local municipal garages.

TaL: o okay thanks . LOL at 'park their car at high speed into trees' . 'darwin themselves' meansRead More what? Darwin hypothesised about bio evolution by nat'l selection. I dnt think a car accident [due to speeding, recklessness, being dunk, being high] is natural selection. But then again, marijuana is off the Earth. Weather is getting warm , college students are back in town, and MCPS are about to be finished until august : this is to be expected .

This is great news, now tell us about the criminal, does he have a record? Has he done this before,Read More was he released early from a previous crime that he should still be in jail for? We need to start keeping people in jail for the time their crime calls for, no more parole, early release etc... and stop the inmates from getting college courses etc... paid for by the tax payers, that can't even afford to put their own children in college.

As a driver who travels the Veirs Mill Rd. pedestrian slalom between St. Catherine Laboure ChurchRead More and the Burger King each day, I congratulate all the drivers who manage to avoid striking anyone. My particular favorites are the strollers pushing moms, the traffic weavers and those wearing all black at night. I think we drivers are doing an excellent job keeping the kills to a minimum.
Ian Brett Cooper May 28, 2013 at 03:23 pm
"Keeping kills to a minimum"? What are you smoking? It never takes long, does it, for theRead More motorists to crawl out and start blaming the victims for the killings that happen on our roads. Shameful! Let's not forget that motorists are STILL required by law to AVOID hitting pedestrians, no matter how dark their clothing, what they happen to be pushing (moms with baby carriages are allowed to cross the road) and how stupidly they're acting. People walking around are not operating a vehicle that weighs 2 tons at speeds of up to 70mph. The greatest responsibility rests with those who are the most likely to do damage. If motorists would simply drive carefully, obeying the speed limit and modifying speed based on the situation, pedestrian deaths wouldn't happen. It's when motorists just assume that they have an entitlement to the road, and that everyone else needs to watch out, that people end up getting killed.

Well, he's a professional, whoever he is. Notice that as he came into the bank he moved very quicklyRead More away from the doors so that the security camera did not get a clear piicture. Robbers know that security cameras are aimed at the door, bbecause that's where people usually have to slow down and hesitate as they step inside. The ball cap (which he seems to hhave removed while inside) and the dreadlock wig and sunglasses all help to conceal his appearance. And the bright yellow jacket draws attention away from his face; it's the feature witnesses will note and remember. The article doesn't say, but I'll bet you the note WASN'T handwritten.

Don't you think after the second burglary, somebody might have thought about doing a real-timeRead More surveillance of the building? Most likely the burglars found a place where they could hide in the building, entered during office hours, hid and waited, and then robbed the place once the building was deserted. Surprisingly common.
Ian Brett Cooper May 11, 2013 at 01:39 pm
Another speed-related crash. When are people going to understand (and do something about) the factRead More that speeding and speed limits that are already too high on many roads are the primary cause of what should be entirely avoidable accidents. In my opinion, no general traffic road, where pedestrians cross and non-motorized traffic is allowed, should have a speed limit over 30mph. With the vast majority of commutes being of 3 miles or less, motorists are saving themselves a total of 2 minutes and 156 seconds. Can we not use those seconds to save a few lives?

This is a good place to focus efforts on improving safety. I would also like to add that movingRead More vehicles in the form of BICYCLES are increasingly unaware of the danger they pose to themselves and others: often ignoring stop signs, riding at dusk without visibility enhancing clothing or lights, or riding on busy roadways instead of bike paths (eg, Beach Drive) where they could too easily be struck by a car trying to pass. Cars don't own the road, but cyclists can be asking for trouble!
Thomas Baginski May 28, 2013 at 01:05 pm
A couple more intersections need to be managed by the sting squad. I often cross at Jones Bridge RdRead More and 355. Nearly everyday 2-3 cars race past me nearly clipping my heals, and moms carting their kids, talking on cell phones often make right turns on red, but ignore the pedestrians. Cross timer is very short for pedestrians there. Another dangerous area is Norbeck (28) and Georgia Ave. 8 lanes of traffic and only a couple lanes watch for pedestrians, then the rest of the lanes race full speed. Walk signals seem almost useless there. I am fit, not a slow walker, but car drivers and their gas pedals act much too quickly these days.
Jeanne mccann June 4, 2013 at 04:45 pm
Excellent! Thank you police!
Kent Berthold May 9, 2013 at 10:04 am
All pedestrian crosswalks should have a stop light to protect the pedestrians. Unfortunately, thereRead More are crosswalks with no stop light and the speed limit is 40 miles per hour and there are three lanes of traffic. How can a driver be watching where he going and avoid being hit by other vehicles and at the same time be looking for pedestrians and cross walks that you may not even be aware that they exist, all at the same time. Shame on Montgomery County for not putting traffic lights at all cross walks to protect our citizens and allow responsible drivers the proper opportunity to stop for them.

Just hours after this article was written, I witnessed a pedestrian being hit by a car while heRead More crossed at a crossing signal (University and Colesville)... I think the MoCo police have the right idea with this initiative.

Woodside Park Bob May 7, 2013 at 02:46 pm
I also agree with Bubba. Brown's position on this makes me less likely to vote for him when theRead More primary election is held.
Confused Voter May 8, 2013 at 03:30 pm
Wow! I remember being so confused about effects bargaining, and there being no facts. All I readRead More were allegations made by the police chief. It appears that everyone here was influenced, because you BELIEVE the union was wrong. What if Leggett allowed lies? Even if all he did was exaggerate the problem, then you all have been duped, and you paid the bill to boot. I think this protest is timely. Democratic leadership in Montgomery County, like the current councilmembers, act like landed gentry. It was just dumb to vote against labor after Wisconsin and Ohio. They are getting what they deserve.
Kim Cooke April 13, 2013 at 08:46 pm
The bottom line: these cameras are effective. They catch speeders and red light runners. I just wishRead More more cops were out there dealing with other moving violations of the extremely aggressive, dangerous drivers all over the roads.
Brian Ceccarelli April 13, 2013 at 10:32 pm
Your view of the situation is normal but unfortunately naive. How many times have you ran redRead More light? Probably at least once a month. You see the turn yellow and you are not sure whether to stop or go. You go and the light turns red about the instant you enter the intersection. If that is you then you are a scofflaw. That fraction of a second misjudgment is responsible for over 82% of the revenue taken by a red light camera company. Read the paper "Misapplied Physics" at http://redlightrobber.com, then make an informed judgement.
Thomas Paine April 14, 2013 at 06:08 pm
It's the speeding cameras that are truly conceived in sin. I have no beef with the red lightRead More cameras. Too many people in this area run red lights.
