Reports: 3rd District Police Station 'Looking Real Good'

County official told the Gazette newspaper that the project is moving along on schedule.

A 32,844-square foot, $11.7 million new facility for Montgomery County Police's Silver Spring District is "looking real good," according to David Dise, director of the county's general services department. The structure broke ground in July, when County Executive Isiah Leggett called the location, at 1002 Milestone Drive in White Oak, strategic. Dise told the Gazette that the roof has been placed and steel support beams have already went up.  “When you look at the greater Silver Spring area today and think about the population that is served, it is an enormous population,” Leggett said. “We believe this location is an ideal location for the department.” The Silver Spring/3rd District serves the entire Route 29 corridor from downtown Silver…

Property Adjacent to White Oak Police Station Will Be Housing or Community Services

Two acres of county-owned land adjacent to the construction site of the Silver Spring police station will be developed for housing or community use, according to county officials.

A small parcel of land adjacent to the site of the soon-to-be relocated Silver Spring-3rd District police station will be developed for housing or community use, according to David Dice, head of Montgomery County's department of general services.  County and police officials broke ground Wednesday on the nearly 35,000-square-foot facility that will serve as the headquarters for Montgomery County Police's 3rd District. The station is located near the intersection of Route 29 and New Hampshire Avenue at 1001 Milestone Drive. Two acres near the new police station have yet to be planned or developed. The Department of Housing and Community Affairs will decide what the land is used for, Dice said.  A proposal to build affordable townhomes or …

Groundbreaking: $11.7 Million Silver Spring Police Station ‘Strategically Located’

A 32,844-square foot building will become the headquarters for Montgomery County Police’s 3rd District.

Construction of a new building to serve as Montgomery County Police’s Silver Spring District headquarters in White Oak is officially underway. Police officers and county officials broke ground on the 32,844-square foot project Wednesday afternoon. The station will be located at 1002 Milestone Drive, near the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Route 29, and will serve the police department’s 3rd District, which extends up the Route 29 corridor from downtown Silver Spring to Burtonsville. The current station was built in 1962 and is located downtown at 801 Sligo Avenue. County Executive Isiah Leggett said the station is “strategically located to serve this growing part of the county.” “When you look at the greater Silver Spring area …

Third District Police Station in White Oak to Break Ground July 18

Officers should move into the new station by late fall 2013, officials said.

Groundbreaking on the White Oak building that will house Montgomery County Police's 3rd District is set for July 18, according to a spokesperson for the county. The district, which polices the entire Route 29 corridor from downtown Silver Spring to Burtonsville, is currently headquartered in downtown Silver Spring. The new headquarters will be built near the center of the district, in White Oak, at the intersection of Milestone Drive and New Hampshire Avenue.   East Silver Spring residents have advocated for the old 3rd District station, at 801 Sligo Ave., to become an arts center.  Mount Airy-based contractors Keller Brothers, Inc. began preparing the nearly 33,000-square foot plot in May. The building is expected to be ready for …

Excited to see the old site re-purposed. Hope it doesn't just remain a bland, white building surrounded by a sea of parking. If it does end up as an arts center, they really, really need to make the facade and lawn pop - large sculptures on the front grounds, building painted uniquely or cover in art, etc. Don't just let it sit there with no one knowing what's inside!   more ›

Residents Call for Arts Center After Police Station Moves to White Oak

The estimated cost of renovating the space in Silver Spring is $750,000, according to organizers.

When the Third District police station—located at 801 Sligo Ave.—vacates next year, East Silver Spring residents are advocating that an arts center should take the station's place instead of a new housing project. The station will be relocating to White Oak, near the intersection of Route 29 and New Hampshire Avenue. In 2009, the police station’s move was announced. Shortly after Karen Roper, an East Silver Spring Civic Association board member, started her campaign for a community space that would be useful for artists, according a Greater Greater Washington report. The Gateway Arts Center (GAC), spearheaded by Roper and local architects, would serve as a community space for artists who need it. A petition in support of the arts center is…

Saving Turtles: Rescue Group Searches Future White Oak Police Station

Before construction crews start on the station, a group of turtle advocates wants to make sure the slow-moving wildlife are safe.

A dense pocket of forested land teeming with wildlife sits so close to the busy intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Columbia Pike in White Oak that cars can be heard whizzing by from the land's perimeter.  In a little over a year, the thick canopy of trees will be replaced with a new base for Montgomery County Police's 3rd District. Construction for the station was supposed to begin in May and crews have already begun clearing the nearly 33,000 square feet plot. Before any major construction work began, however, Puller Lanigan, who lives near the site, wanted to be sure some of the area's least-adaptable residents were protected.  She pulled together dozens of neighbors and wildlife enthusiasts from other parts of the region to look …
