The Great Gatsby is slated to premier on the big screen and it's inspiring people to delve deeper into the story’s history, culture, music, food and drink. Starting with F. Scott Fitzgerald’s grave at St. Mary’s Church in Rockville, there are a number of local places to help you get your Gatsby on, according to The Washington Post. If you venture to Fitzgerald’s gravesite, take note of the epitaph, which reads, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” This quote is the final line in The Great Gatsby. You can view costumes, set designs, paintings and films from the Gatsby era at the National Gallery of Art’s “Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes” exhibit, which opens May 12. Check out some Art Deco …

Dinner at a dimly-lit local restaurant. A bouquet of red roses and a heart-shaped box of chocolates. An intimate home cooked meal for two by candlelight. While the "old stand-bys" can offer a nice time on Valentine's Day, what if you are single, are trying to diet and don't want the chocolate or just feel like you're stuck in a rut? Shake things up this year and try one of these alternatives to the traditional Valentine's Day activities: Brookside Gardens in Wheaton will host a Singles' Campfire on Friday, February 8 from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. Singles aged 35-50 can enjoy hot cider and engage in ice-breakers, warm-up and some nature-themed games around a blazing campfire. The AFI in Silver Spring is featuring a series of great movie romances …

Activities may include a double scary movie feature at AFI Silver, a 5K obstacle course and a performance at The Fillmore.
What better way to feel really alive than to consort with the undead for a night? Silver Spring's Zombie Night, an event that will replace the annual Zombie Walk, is planned for Saturday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m., according to the event's website. Organizers wrote that logistics and red tape--insurance policies, planned sidewalk repair and cost--kept the traditonal walk from happening. "But you've been strong and patient. You've planned your costumes and consumed gray matter. And you've made this one of the great annual events in Silver Spring," reads the event website. "We don't want to let that go. To that end, we are working with local organizations, including AFI Silver Theatre, the Silver Spring Urban District, The Fillmore and a variety …

F. Scott Fitgerald was not always buried at St. Mary's Church in Rockville. I visited his grave at Rockville Union Cemetery in the early 1970's. At the time of my visit, it was my understanding that the Catholic Church refused to bury F. Scott Fitzgerald in St. Mary's when he died. It's amazing that, after F. Scott Fitgerald became so famous, the Church reconsidered.   more ›
