Reports: MCPS Reorganizes Central Office, Focuses on Principals

Superintendent Starr reorganizes staff and wants to give principals a direct line to him, the Gazette reports.

It's Dr. Joshua Starr's second full year as superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools and he's making changes. The Gazette reports that he reorganized parts of his staff in an effort to reach out to school principals. Back in April, former Northeast Consortium community superintendent Beth Schiavino-Narvaez was picked to head the newly created Office of School Support and Improvement, formerly the Office of School Performance. The office will "better align and coordinate direct services to schools and principals," according to a statement from the district. What MCPS needs to do is get rid of the unions that drive the costs up, cut back on the number of "administrators", reduce the cost of doing business to allow more money to go to the education of our children. Leader Chosen for Northeast Consortium Schools

Dr. Myra J. Smith previously served MCPS as a principal and central office leader.

About a month after Beth Schiavino-Narvaez was promoted to a central office position with Montgomery County Public Schools, the school board approved Dr. Myra J. Smith as the new community superintendent for the Northeast Consortium and Sherwood clusters. Prior to Smith's April 30 appointment, she served as the acting community superintendent for the clusters before and after Schiavino-Narvaez's hiring. According to her biography, Smith joined MCPS 12 years ago as principal of Strathmore Elementary in Aspen Hill. Beginning her career in the Baltimore area, she worked as an elementary school teacher in Baltimore City and as a special education teacher, assistant principal and principal in Baltimore County public schools.  The community …

Northeast Consortium Superintendent Appointed to New Position

Beth Schiavino-Narvaez will serve as the deputy superintendent for the new Office of School Support and Improvement.

East Montgomery County schools are once again on the hunt for a new leader.  Community superintendent Beth Schiavino-Narvaez, who heads East County's 31 schools, has been appointed to a newly created position as deputy superintendent for the Office of School Support and Improvement, according to a release from Montgomery County Public Schools.  The office will "better align and coordinate direct services to schools and principals," reads the release. Replacing the current office of school performance, the school support and improvement office will oversee community superintendents and provide professional development and leadership development.  Schiavino-Narvaez will begin the new position on April 1.
