Report: County Signs Contract With Company Behind DC Bikeshare

Bikes should be available in Silver Spring, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Takoma Park in August or September, WTOP reported.

The company that already operates the bikeshare program in the District of Columbia and Arlington and Alexandria in Virginia will run Montgomery County's bikeshare program, WTOP reported. Alta Bicycle Share signed a contract with county officials Wednesday to create more than 29 docks for 200 rentable bikes in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Silver Spring and Takoma Park, according to the radio station. The company should be able to deliver the bikes in the next four to five months, meaning the program would be up and running in August or September of this year.  Meanwhile, county councilmembers are discussing how to improve safety for bike riders, including adding more bike lanes and possibly employing a shared lane system, like the ones in DC and…

Joe, bikeshares are typically operated on a pay scale—you pay for how long you want to ride. No one gets the bikes for free.   more ›

Late September Launch Expected For Downcounty Bikeshare System

29 docking stations with 200 bikes are planned for Friendship Heights, Bethesda, Medical Center, Takoma Park and Silver Spring.

The first phase of a bikeshare system could be up and running by Sept. 21, Sandra Brecher of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation said Monday. Speaking at a meeting of the Western Montomery County Citizens Advisory Board, Brecher outlined a timeline for the system, which will offer a low-cost alternative transportation method in the most congested portions of the county. Phase one, funded through a state transportation grant, calls for 29 docking stations with 200 bikes in Bethesda, Friendship Heights, Medical Center, Takoma Park and Silver Spring. The system is planned to build off of the success of Capital Bikeshare and is designed for "point-to-point connections" between home and transit or transit and work to extend the …

Eleven of those stations will be in Bethesda and four will be in Friendship Heights, Bethesda Patch added. To get the ball rolling on building the docking stations, the Montgomery County Council approved two measures on Tuesday, Nov. 13, Bethesda Now reported: The Chevy Chase Land Company is one of the county transportation department's private sector partners, and has offered to pay for two stations—one in Friendship Heights and the other in Bethesda. The land company's pledge enabled the county transportation department to come up …

Tentative Locations Detailed for Downcounty Bikeshare Stations

Some concerned about bike safety ahead of implementation of proposed bikeshare system, detailed at a Monday advisory board meeting.

(See the map to the right for specific locations in Silver Spring and Takoma Park.)  The Montgomery County Department of Transportation outlined their plans for the system at a Monday meeting of the Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board. If DC where I biked to work for years can install bike lanes & safety, we can do it in MoCo. We need safe, bike able pathways to work. Georgia Avenue, on which I commute daily, is a nightmare with no dedicated bike lanes, giant dips & holes in downtown Silver Spring & 1 sign that says bikes share the lane by the south bound underpass. To attract younger & working people priced out of DC, let's …   more ›

Developers Could Help Fund Downcounty Bikeshare System

Transportation impact taxes -- paid by developers for transportation improvements -- would be used to fund the system under legislation introduced Tuesday.

A new downcounty bikeshare system could be funded in part by transportation impact tax revenues under legislation introduced Tuesday by Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner (D-Dist. 1) and Councilwoman Valerie Ervin (D-Dist. 5). The system, planned for Friendship Heights, Bethesda, Medical Center, Takoma Park, Silver Spring, and eventually, Wheaton and Forest Glen, is aimed to offer up a low-cost alternative transportation method in the most congested portions of the county. The network is planned to build off of the success of Capital Bikeshare, which has already seen increasing demand in Arlington and Washington, D.C., logging more than 1.5 million bike trips in its first 18 months. The transportation impact tax is paid by …

Montgomery County Readies Application for Bikeshare Funding

Montgomery County Department of Transportation staff are preparing an application for government funding for a bikeshare program along both branches of Metro's Red Line.

Montgomery County is pedaling ever closer to getting a bikeshare program going along both branches of Metro’s Red Line. The popular bright red Capital Bikeshare bikes of Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Va., made a cameo appearance Tuesday night at an open house at Rockville’s Executive Office Building, when local residents offered suggestions to county transportation officials about where they thought bikeshare stations should be located in Montgomery County. The Capital Bikeshare program is a model for the planned bikeshare program in Montgomery County, and the open house was held as part of the county transportation department’s application for government funds, administered through the Maryland Department of Transportation, to start up…
