County Etches Out Plans for Burtonsville

Road construction plans are on hold while a neighborhood plan and design recommendations to the Central Business District progress.

Leaders from county and state agencies met on Tuesday, Nov. 30 to discuss plans for Burtonsville's future. And while everyone from the State Highway Administration to the Department of Housing and Community Affairs has taken a look at the town over the years, the message of the meeting, from some departments, was that things are on hold until funding is available. Kate Mazzara, of the State Highway Association's Greenbelt office, brought updates from a proposed project to widen the MD 28-Route 198 corridor. Planning for this on hold, "due to the economic turndown," and no further planning has taken place, reported Mazzara. Three options are currently being considered by SHA, Mazzara said. I have lived in Burtonsville my entire life and I have no idea why change takes so long. I agree with the previous post- driving though Burtonsville is a traffic nightmare. The road needs a center turn lane and some serious improvements to buildings and facades. This study is going to continue into November 2011??? That's ridiculous! County Planning Department Prepping Burtonsville Neighborhood Plan

The neighborhood plan is the first of its kind in the county.

Burtonsville is the subject of Montgomery County Planning Department's first Neighborhood Plan. According to the department, the idea is to spend a year studying the area and offering infrastructure solutions.  "We have to be very small in our focus because this is a one-year plan," lead planner Kristin O'Connor told Patch. The neighborhood plan will likely propose one or two changes for the business district of Burtonsville. O'Connor said that specific details about the plan are up in the air since she wants to hear from residents. we desperately need a traffic light on peach orchard and md198. there is a post office, church, school,and in the summer a summer camp. during rush hour it is impossible to turn there so alot of residents have to go the long way up Briggs cheny and new Hampshire just to get where they are going. i dont think its asking much to do this and i think it will prevent a lot of accidents.   more ›
