Here we go again. Another big fire sale on books and other merchandise is under way at Borders -- this time in downtown Silver Spring rather than at Friendship Heights. All the same to this writer who happens to live in Rollingwood, a section of Chevy Chase that’s actually roughly equi-distant from both downtown Silver Spring and Friendship Heights, though if you commute downtown you should take the Metro from Friendship Heights because that’s much faster. So here’s the game plan of what to expect as Borders liquidates over the next couple of months. The sale begins Friday, July 22.
It's a bittersweet day for book lovers in Silver Spring after Borders book company officially announced that it is closing its doors. When the company filed for the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy back in February and closed hundreds of stores, downtown Silver Spring had been spared. But the location's future became drastically uncertain when the company sought an approval for liquidation of the remaining 399 stores in a U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Southern District of New York Thursday. An early morning email sent from Mike Edwards, the president of Borders Group, bid farewell to customers. The second major retail store that may close in downtown.
The days when you can peruse the Borders bookstore or glance through your favorite magazine may be coming to an end by this September in downtown Silver Spring. An earlier attempt to stay in business failed after the company didn't get any substantial financial bids to restructure their business, according to a report by the Washington Post. In February, Borders filed for a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and closed hundreds of stores to help with a new "strategy to reposition its business model and their brand." Downtown wasn't included in these cuts. If the scheduled bookseller is granted the approval to liquidate the remaining 399 stores, downtown Silver Spring will lose another major retail store.
