Time to Re-think Our Place in the World?

Montgomery County no longer in top 10 of county wealth.

For Montgomery County, the U.S. Census data released this week were a bit of an eye-opener. Although we still like to still think of ourselves as one of the nation’s top five wealthiest counties — and used to rank second or third each year in the median family income rankings — we are now slipping lower and lower in this crucial measure, especially compared to the jurisdictions around us. We fell out of the top five a few years back, and now we’re no longer in the top 10. So who's at the top this year? Once again, Loudoun County, Virginia, is the richest county in America. I’m Not the Nanny and I Don't Play One on TV

A mother of multiracial children is caught off guard by strangers' questions.

Last week, three of my friends emailed me the link to the same story. An editorial piece from CNN editor Rose Arce, titled "I’m Her Mom, Not the Nanny," shares Arce’s parenting experience in New York. Because she’s Latina and her daughter has straight hair and has a lighter skin tone, Arce is commonly mistaken for the babysitter. This situation isn’t unique to New York City or Rose Arce. One of the reasons my husband and I chose to live in the D.C. metro area, despite the high cost of living, is because of the area’s diversity. We especially enjoy Silver Spring. A drive around town reveals its diverse cultures thanks to the plethora of ethnic restaurants. We could probably eat our way through six continents without leaving Silver Spring. …
