Jeweler Sponsors 'Diamond in the Ruff' to Benefit Mutts Matter

The Boone & Sons event includes the raffle of a $1,250 diamond necklace, with all proceeds going to Mutts Matter.

Businesses of all shapes and sizes donate to charity, often giving to large, name-brand organizations with big marketing budgets. Everyone can rally around the fight to cure cancer, help kids in need or support victims of natural disasters, and all of these things are very worthy and important causes. What’s not as common, however, is to see prominent businesses get behind local dog rescue. Rescue groups like Mutts Matter get most of their corporate sponsorships from companies in the pet industry that understand the importance of rescue and know the hard, sad facts—that five to seven million animals enter the shelter system each year, and over four million don’t make it out.    As an all-volunteer, nonprofit rescue, Mutts Matter is …

Editor's Note: Fenton Street Conversation and Batting for Charity

Patch employees volunteer five business days a year to a local organization. Saturday was a day full of fun and one to remember.

This past Saturday, July 9, I had a wonderful time talking to Patch readers who stopped by the Fenton Street Conversation to talk about improving Silver Spring Patch. We bounced around a few ideas and fine-tuned feature stories that will be great once they launch. I want to thank everyone for taking time out of their Saturday to chat with me about making the Silver Spring community better. After I left the conversation table, I put on my sneakers and headed out to Norwood Park in Chevy Chase to help raise money for charity with A Wider Circle. This local nonprofit organization provides essentials to people in need of clothing, food, life skills, and much more. For my Patch Give 5 Day, I decided to get on the field and help raise money by …

Alex’s Lemonade Stand’s Lemonade Days – June 10-12, 2011

Will your child participate and be the next Whiz Kid?

At some point, we’ve all run a lemonade stand in our driveway. It was a great way to make a few quarters to spend on ice cream, a new baseball mitt or jump rope. But what kind of lemonade stand raises $40 million dollars? Alex’s Lemonade Stand! A young cancer patient named Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004) decided to open a lemonade stand to raise money to help all kids with cancer. She recruited volunteers from all over the map to help reach her goal of $1 million, which was achieved just prior to Alex’s death in 2004. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) came out of that first driveway stand and has raised $40 million to date. June 10-12, 2011 is the foundation’s national fundraising weekend, called “Lemonade Days”, and Patch would …
