Vote on Name for Chesapeake Bay Trust's Heron

The currently nameless heron appears on Maryland license plates.

Driving around Montgomery County, you are sure to see cars with the "Treasure the Chesapeake" Maryland license plates. But did you know that the heron pictured on the license plates doesn't have a name? That may soon change. Officials at the Chesapeake Bay Trust are looking for input to help name its blue heron mascot. From now through April 26, the organization is asking Marylanders to vote on its website for one of three finalists: Hattie the Heron, Seemore D. Bay and Wade. More than 550 names were submitted to the organization's contest, according to a press release. "Submissions ranged from names that rhymed with heron, to ones that represented famous Marylanders, to others that held a personal story or connection the submitter had …

Burst of Flavor at the 4th Annual Tomato Taste

Most people loved this juicy, red fruit.

Over 250 tomato fans gathered for the Fourth Annual Washington Gardener Magazine Tomato Tasting on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the FreshFarm Market in downtown Silver Spring. Tomato taste attendees came from near and far. The majority were Silver Spring residents and from the nearby area (D.C., Ellicott City, Rockville, etc.). But some tasters made the journey from as far away as Massachusetts, Tennessee, New York, West Virginia, Illinois, New Mexico, and even Rome, Italy.  The one thing they all had in common was a love of this juicy, red fruit. Many wanted to sample and see varieties they’d like to try out for themselves in their own home gardens. Others attend for the sheer love of great food and an appreciation for locally grown specialty …
