White Knuckle Parenting: Losing a Furry Friend

The death of a family pet can be devastating for kids. Hopefully my family's story can give you some ideas to help your own children with pet loss.

My family had a sad weekend. Cassidy, our 13-year-old dog, has been in declining health for a long time. On Saturday, we had our vet come to our home to put her to sleep while she sat on her dog bed and my husband and I petted her head.  It was the hardest thing I've done in a long time. Even worse, it was emotionally wrenching for my kids. Losing a pet is difficult for anyone, but it is especially hard for children who don't necessarily understand euthanasia or what happens after death. Sadly, my kids have become experienced at losing furry family members. Over the past couple of years, we have lost five mice and a beloved cat. It has been heartbreaking every time. I believe in being honest and straightforward with my kids even when the …

Fatal Case of Human Rabies First in Maryland Since 1976

Fewer than five adults die from rabies in the United States each year.

UPDATE: March 15 A Maryland man whom the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene confirmed died of rabies contracted the disease from a kidney transplant, according to The Washington Post. It was the first case in the state of fatal rabies since 1976. Citing two unnamed sources familiar with the case, the report said the patient, a man in his 20s, died at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington after receiving the transplant at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 2011. The report said that three people in other states received organs from the same Florida donor. Their conditions were reportedly unknown. Police, Medical Examiner Investigating Woman’s Death, Possible Link to Abortion in Germantown

Anti-abortion protestors allege the woman died after receiving an abortion at Germantown Reproductive Services.

The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the death of a 29-year-old woman whom anti-abortion activists allege died after receiving an abortion at Germantown Reproductive Health Services. The woman died Thursday at Shady Grove Hospital, according to the chief medical examiner’s office. The cause and manner of death was still pending. “Any speculation at this point would be premature,” spokesman Bruce Goldfarb told Patch. Montgomery County Police is coordinating with the medical examiner’s office on the investigation and is awaiting its report, a police spokeswoman told Patch on Monday. Last week, Capt. Estranged Husband Confesses To Fatal Stabbing Of Silver Spring Woman

An estranged husband is in police custody, after turning himself in after stabbing his wife.

Montgomery County Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of Silver Spring woman. Her husband turned himself in for the crime and is in custody, according to an NBC Washington report. The body of Ana Ayala, 47, was found in the front passenger seat of a car around 8:15 a.m. Saturday in the 8600 block of Garland Avenue. Ayala was later pronounced dead from her wounds at a local hospital, the report states. Ayala's estranged husband, Hector Granados, 44, turned himself into police at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, according to NBC's report.
