Report: Fillmore Silver Spring Made 2,000 Pounds of Food on Thanksgiving

The concert venue held its first "Giving Thanks" lunch for people in need.

The Fillmore Silver Spring served up a tall order for Thanksgiving—2,000 pounds of classic Thanksgiving fare for people in need, according to ABC7.  The concert venue announced that it would host a special holiday lunch and asked for donations of food and clothes, which they bundled and sent home with the guests. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett volunteered, ABC7 reported.  “This is the first event and I predict it will only get bigger and better as we move,” said Leggett. Chefs worked for two days to cook dozens of turkeys and bake 60 pies, ABC7 reported. Any leftover turkey, stuffing and pie was donated to Silver Spring-based nonprofit Shepherd's Table.  "The Fillmore Silver Spring is all about bringing music to the people of …

Youth Charity Concert Rocks Fillmore Stage

Teens from around Montgomery County rocked the stage.

More than 150 kids from around Montgomery County rocked the stage at the Fillmore Silver Spring on Saturday for a growing music program called "Rock-in Schools." The movement's goal is to reform the music education around the nation by simultaneously introducing contemporary and traditional music programs.  Despite overwhelming statistics on the positive impact of music instruction on overall academic performance and school attendance, a large percentage of secondary students do not participate in music education at school because instructors say they are not motivated by some of the traditional band and orchestra programs that comprise most public school music classes.  "These kids may love music, but unless they can afford after-school …

A couple from Ring House, a living facility for seniors in Rockville, tells us their love story.

Eleanor Grunberg, 88, wasn’t looking for love when she moved into Ring House, an independent living facility in Rockville. That all changed when she met fellow resident Julien Sacks. “I wake up every day being so glad that it’s another good day that I’ll be seeing him,” Grunberg said as she held her partner’s hands at the Fillmore Silver Spring’s Valentine’s dance Sunday night. “He’s just a strong presence in my life.” “I liked her,” Sacks, 91, said of his first impressions of Grunberg. “We just enjoyed each other’s company. Then it got to be a little more friendly. It got real friendly after a while.” The pair, together for three years now, decided against marriage because “it’s much more fun and exciting this way,” Grunberg said. “We …

The Fillmore Hosts Valentine’s Dance for the Elderly

More than 1,000 people live in the Charles E. Smith communities.

Valentine’s Day came two days early for more than 70 residents and 25 staff members of the Charles E. Smith Life Communities, who were invited on Sunday to a night of music and dancing at the Fillmore Silver Spring. These residents were invited because they volunteer at Charles E. Smith by working at the library or putting on plays, according to Alan Freeman, who sits on the board of governors and is president of the Landow House and Ring House, two of five living facilities at Charles E. Smith in Rockville. “It’s just a nice way to get them to a different kind of event they don’t usually get. Band kicks-off their first-ever acoustic tour in Silver Spring.

Over the past 25 years, Georgia-based band Widespread Panic has crafted a reputation as one of the most acclaimed live bands by keeping the audience guessing whether the next song would be a directionally straight, album track-length version, or simply serve as the on-ramp to an extended jam session that would take them on a remarkable journey through sonic corridors. During their performance at the Fillmore Silver Spring, the band took the road less travelled with a 23-song all-acoustic set list that transformed the music venue into an intimate living room setting, marking the first night of an their “Wood” tour, the band’s first-ever acoustic tour.
