Anti-abortion protestors allege the woman died after receiving an abortion at Germantown Reproductive Services.
The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the death of a 29-year-old woman whom anti-abortion activists allege died after receiving an abortion at Germantown Reproductive Health Services. The woman died Thursday at Shady Grove Hospital, according to the chief medical examiner’s office. The cause and manner of death was still pending. “Any speculation at this point would be premature,” spokesman Bruce Goldfarb told Patch. Montgomery County Police is coordinating with the medical examiner’s office on the investigation and is awaiting its report, a police spokeswoman told Patch on Monday. Last week, Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman, told The Washington Post that there was “no indication of any criminal activity …

Germantown couple's runaway dog was spotted by an airport employee Thursday night.
On Thursday, Patch and several other news outlets picked up the story about Ralph: a dog that after being rescued from the streets of Egypt and flown to Dulles Airport, got spooked by a loud noise and ran away from his would-be owner when they got to the parking lot. Since the story appeared, there have been at least two Ralph sightings, according to Dave Scott, the Germantown resident who had hoped to bring the animal home. In an email to Patch on Friday, Scott wrote: "Update, last night Ralph was spotted at Dulles Airport by an employee around 11pm. We searched for about an hour, but could not find him. He was then reported to be seen near the Greenway (near Dulles), but he could not be caught. We are searching with a few friends …

Bonfire begins after 5 p.m. Friday, assistant farm manager Tyler Butler said.
It might not be too late to get a tree, but time’s running out if your tree shopping must include a warm bonfire. Butler’s Orchard in Germantown is hosting its final bonfire of the year on Friday. There will be plenty of marshmallows to go around, according to Tyler Butler, assistant farm manager. Butler said while it wasn't the first time the orchard has had bonfires, it was the first time they've offered up marshmallows. He said he hopes it becomes a new tradition and attracts people to the orchard on a Friday night. “We get so busy on weekends,” Butler said. “But some people say it’s the only time they can get out to the farm.” On Friday, the orchard will be open until 9:30 p.m. The bonfire begins after 5. More details are available on…

After 18-hour flight, dog got spooked, bolted from the Dulles Airport parking lot Wednesday.
(Updated) A Germantown couple who eagerly awaited the arrival of a street dog they rescued from Egypt are now trying to find the animal, which bolted from its crate while being taken through the parking lot at Dulles Airport Wednesday night. Would-be owners, David Scott and his wife—who Scott said was too distraught and did not want to be named—are waging a public campaign to find Ralphie, a German Shephard and Labrador mix. They’ve made the appeal to local television stations, are creating fliers and have posted the loss on Craigslist. NBC Washington was among the first news outlets to pick up the story. “My wife and I spent four and a half hours at the airport last night, in the cold and the dark searching for him,” Scott told Patch, as …

The Washington Spirit will play, train at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
A professional women’s soccer team is coming to Germantown, team administrators announced Wednesday. The Washington Spirit, to be managed by the U.S. Soccer Federation, will train and compete at the Maryland SoccerPlex—the former home of women’s pro team the Washington Freedom, according to the team's general manager Chris Hummer. Mike Jorden, coach of the amateur team that played as the DC United Women at the 'Plex, would lead the Washington Spirit. "Mike is an excellent coach on the training field, a strong game tactician, and he's a great communicator with the players," Hummer said in a statement. "He is also one of the hardest-working coaches off the field. He already bleeds for the club, and I'm confident no one will outwork him off …

The Germantown Wegmans was once perceived as a threat, The Washington Business Journal reports.
Harris Teeter is coming to Clarksburg, several news outlets have reported. But two years ago, developers were ambivalent about building a Harris Teeter in Clarksburg, for fear that the Wegmans proposed for Germantown would siphon too many Clarksburg shoppers. Citing comments from old newspaper accounts, The Washington Business Journal reported that in 2010 developers said they’d call off plans to build a Harris Teeter in Clarksburg if a Wegmans were allowed to anchor at The Shops at Seneca Medaows in Germantown. The article pointed to comments made by a Clarksburg developer two years ago in The Gazette: “Kathryn Kubit of Elm Street Development in McLean, Va., project manager for the planned Clarksburg Village development, wrote to the …
The ticket was a third-tier winner in the $587.5 million Powerball drawing.
A Powerball ticket worth $10,000 was purchased at a convenience store in Germantown and has not yet been claimed, Maryland Lottery officials said Tuesday. The ticket—the only third-tier winner in Montgomery County—was sold from the 7-Eleven at 19700 Frederick Road, according to a lottery spokesperson. The ticket holder has 182 days from the drawing date to redeem the prize. The drawing was held Thursday. While most Maryland Powerball players were hoping to win the $587.5 million jackpot last week, state lotto officials said 11 tickets sold in Maryland were second and third-tier prize winners—such as a woman from Edgewood who won $2 million. Two other unclaimed third-tier winners were sold at a Baltimore 7-Eleven and Stop 4 All in Ft. …

Germantown 7-Eleven group theft inspires state bill.
The highly publicized 7-Eleven group theft in Germantown has inspired a bill that delivers stiffer penalties on thefts committed by mob. “This is something serious and we needed to address it with something deeply as serious, making sure these kids don't make these bad decisions again,” Councilman Craig Rice, (D-District 2) said in the parking lot outside the Germantown 7-Eleven targeted by a group theft in August. Rice, a former state delegate, and state Del. Jeffrey Waldstreicher (D-District 18) worked together on the bill and hosted a press conference Monday outside the convenience store to publicize the details. If passed, the Flash Mob Theft Act of 2012 would treat multiple acts of theft committed by multiple individuals in unison as …
