Giant Recalls Mangoes for Salmonella Risk

The product is listed under five possible labels in grocery stores.

Giant Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets are halting sales of Daniella mangos because of possible salmonella contamination. The voluntary recall from product distributor Splendid warns customers about the mangoes sold throughout the United States between July 12 and Aug. 29, 2012. “We want to let everyone know our top priority is public safety,” said Splendid Products general manager Larry Nienkerk. “We have notified all of our customers and we are working with all the government agencies that are involved. We didn’t want to wait.” The recall was prompted after the fruit was linked to recent cases of salmonellosis in Canada and possibly California. The Mexican product was sold as an individual fruit and can be identified by the …

Grocery Unions Jittery Ahead of New Contract Talks with Giant and Safeway

United Food & Commercial Workers union calls for an early start to contract negotiations, but grocery chains won’t agree.

Negotiations for a new labor contract to cover thousands of grocery workers in Maryland have not even begun, but there are signs it will be a painful and perhaps disruptive process. Tom McNutt, president of Landover-based United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400, said the union is gearing up for a struggle with two of the biggest grocery chains in the area—Giant Foods and Safeway. The union has begun mobilizing shop stewards and union members at more than a 100 grocery stores in Maryland, Washington, DC, and northern Virginia, McNutt said. An educational campaign among members and the general public is in full swing, he added. More directly, the union has requested an early start of negotiations to replace the current contract, which …

The grocery store company's gas station will open Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6 a.m.

Update, Sept. 13: The gas station will open at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, according to Giant spokesperson Jamie Miller. Original story, Sept. 1: There are signs of progress at New Hampshire Avenue and Midland Road, the site of Giant's first branded gas station in Montgomery County.  The station should open later this month, Giant spokesperson Jamie Miller told Patch. Demolition began in May to turn the former Excel gas station into a Giant gas station.  Giant isn't new to the gas business and currently operates eight stations in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Colesville Giant Plans Gas Station

The grocery store chain is planning to takeover the Excel Gas location on Midland Road.

Giant Food plans to replace the Excel Gas on New Hampshire Avenue and Midland Road with a Giant-owned station, say representatives for the corporation. The proposed project will be just across the road from the Colesville Giant grocery store.  Plans for the new station are still in the early stages, Jamie Miller, public affairs manager for Giant, told Patch. "We are currently working with the Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services to obtain technical permits," Miller wrote in an email. According to the department's website, there is a "demolish or move" permit currently pending, but it was submitted in 1999 and may not be associated with Giant's current project.  Giant isn't new to the gas business and currently operates eight…

Congrats on getting Colesville Patch off to such a great start Whitney! The staff at Excel are great but the physical plant is really poor. It would be unfortunate if the staff were moved out in the process. I like the "remove" part of the demolish and remove permit, but if there is going to be a gas station at that location, better that it be run by an organization that has the resources and the…   more ›
