Competition offers grants and services to life science and high tech companies.
Several companies across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties have made it to the second round of the InvestMaryland Challenge, a competition in which start-up companies can win a portion of $300,000 in grants and/or business services. Of the 250 companies that initially applied to the competition, 71 were selected to advance to the second round, with 20 in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. In the second round, the entrants’ business plans will be reviewed and judged with semi-finalists announced Feb. 19, and the Governor’s Cup Award Ceremony on April 15. Montgomery County has been awarded $159,701 in federal funding earmarked for violent crime reduction and other public safety activities, Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin announced Thursday. The U.S. Department of Justice grant is one in a $6.3 million bundle given to the state, county, and local governments of Maryland. The county's share will be used to install a system that can deliver video intelligence wirelessly to commanders and operational personnel in an emergency and to develop the capability to share that data with other law enforcement agencies. More than $2,000 given to enrich five groups at Paint Branch High School.
On Monday, Dec. 12, the Paint Branch High School Education Foundation awarded grants totaling $2,300 to five different PBHS groups. The groups’ interests range from music and fitness, to cooking, photography and reading. In a time where school budgets continue to shrink, organizations like the Paint Branch Foundation can have a significant impact on the student’s lives.
