Hospital in Silver Spring receives top marks for surgical care and treating heart failure, heart attack and pneumonia.
Silver Spring's Holy Cross Hospital is the only health facility in the Baltimore-Washington region to be named to The Joint Commission's Top Performers on Key Quality Measures list. The hospital's care of patients suffering from heart failure, heart attack, pneumonia and surgical care were noted. Of the 620 facilities named, healthcare heavyweights like Johns Hopkins in Baltimore were not included, the Washington Post reports. Part of the reason Holy Cross, a relatively small, 448-bed hospital, was listed and not larger hospitals is its prevention methods, such as giving aspirin to heart attack patients and prescribing anti-stroke medicine to stroke patients once they leave, the Post reports. Yancy Phillips, vice president of quality …

April 18th baby makes 100,000th delivery for the hospital.
Holy Cross Hospital reached a milestone on April 18, delivering its 100,000th baby since 2000. “This is a great, great day for the hospital. This is an amazing accomplishment,” President and CEO Kevin Sexton said in a videotaped speech to medical professionals, mothers and their children, who were born at the hospital since 2000. “All the people who have worked to get people prenatal care when they need it and couldn’t afford it, and to get them the best possible care when they came to the hospital are the reasons why this hospital delivers one out of every eight babies” born in Maryland, he said. During the 1990s, birth rates were falling “by 2.5 percent in the state and 3.5 percent at Holy Cross,” Sexton said in the video. Hoping to …

Drill will test Montgomery County hospitals' readiness to respond to crisis situations.
Victims with fake injuries and bandages? Hospital staff dressed in full haz-mat gear? No, this is not just another Halloween event at Holy Cross Hospital. Rather, the Silver Spring-based hospital is participating in a mock exercise today with other Montgomery County hospitals, the county’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security announced. The exercise will test how well the regional hospitals respond and work together in a crisis situation such as a terrorist attack or a natural disaster that leaves mass casualties in its wake. “As the scenarios come in, we just respond to them,” said Yolanda Gaskins, a spokesperson for Holy Cross Hospital. “We don’t know what the scenarios will be.” Gaskins warned that area residents should …

The fire broke out around 11:15 p.m. Thursday.
Update, 5 p.m.: Crews are still working to clean up water damage after a mechanical device sent smoke through the third floor of Holy Cross Hospital Thursday evening, said Yolanda Gaskins, the spokeswoman for Holy Cross Hospital. The smoke caused hospital officials to evacuate 12 high-risk pregnant women out of their rooms for a short amount of time, Gaskins added. Hospital officials also had to close one bank of elevators and the laundry room after they were immersed in water. The crews are working to clean up water damage in the gift shop and throughout the building. There were no injuries reported, and the hospital is running their clinical operations as usual, Gaskins said. Orignal Post, 6 a.m.: No injuries are being reported from a …

My memories are ones of shocking hostility from the nurses and the doctors who treated my father 10 years ago. I wanted them to try to save my dad's life and they were not afraid or ashamed to show me how they felt about it. I guess they saw too many older people who "want everything done" and they were not pleased. Finally they euthanized my pops by witholding treatment and letting me watch him …   more ›
