Local officials, VIP's and residents celebrate latest addition to Veterans Plaza.
While Silver Springers have enjoyed the long-awaited ice rink on Veterans Plaza since December 18, the skating venue received the VIP treatment on Saturday with the official dedication celebration hosted by County Executive Ike Leggett. Local band dc motors took the stage just before noon, entertaining the crowd with a mix of classic rock, R & B and modern rock, while people enjoyed cookies from Potbelly and kept warm with hot chocolate from Eggspectation. Tri-State Ice Management still needs to apply for permits before the rink is ready for operations.
Following weeks of failed contract negotiations it appears downtown Silver Spring's Ice rink is now back on track to open before Christmas, with a vendor finally lined up to operate the facility. Montgomery County gave official word on Tuesday of a notice of intent to award the operating contract to Tri-State Ice Management, based in Annapolis. "We have posted an award to Tri-State," confirmed David Dise, Director of the Department of General Services. "We will send a final exchange of documents including the standard form agreement hopefully by tomorrow, then Tri-State will sign off on the documents." Contract negotiations with two final operating competitors, Tri-State and Rink Management of Mechanicsville, Va., came to a halt earlier …
