Silver Spring Ice Rink at Veterans Plaza Opens Friday

The downtown SIlver Spring rink at Veterans Plaza will be open until March.

The interactive fountain in downtown Silver Spring is closed, but as of today, Oct. 19, the ice rink is open, the Gazette reports.  Since it debuted in late 2010, the rink has remained open daily through March. Last year, 47,000 people skated on the ice, the newspaper reported.  For those that aren't comfortable on the ice yet, look for five-week sessions starting late October for youth, adults, ice hockey, parent-child pairs and home school students, said the Gazette.  According to the rink's website, admission is $8 for adults, $7 for kids 12 and under and for adults 55 and over. County Executive Ike Leggett Formally Dedicates Silver Spring Ice Rink

Local officials, VIP's and residents celebrate latest addition to Veterans Plaza.

While Silver Springers have enjoyed the long-awaited ice rink on Veterans Plaza since December 18, the skating venue received the VIP treatment on Saturday with the official dedication celebration hosted by County Executive Ike Leggett. Local band dc motors took the stage just before noon, entertaining the crowd with a mix of classic rock, R & B and modern rock, while people enjoyed cookies from Potbelly and kept warm with hot chocolate from Eggspectation. Silver Spring Regional Center Director Reemberto Rodriguez was both excited and anxious. “What a great place this has become for the public; we are finally in the business of having a real public square. For Little Ones, Holiday Fun Leads to Holiday Fatigue

Changes in routine are anything but routine changes.

"Never underestimate the power of the bedtime routine," my mother admonished as she and I watched my son repeatedly hurl himself onto the sofa. It was Christmas Eve and already two hours past his bedtime. Because we still hadn't gotten around to opening gifts, I convinced myself that he could hold it together for a little while longer. It had been about an hour since he began exhibiting the signs of sleep deprivation. We were long past eye-rubbing and well into "Phase II," the constant movement of some or all of his body parts in an effort to keep himself awake. Silver Spring Ice Rink Deal Finally Thaws Out

Tri-State Ice Management still needs to apply for permits before the rink is ready for operations.

Following weeks of failed contract negotiations it appears downtown Silver Spring's Ice rink is now back on track to open before Christmas, with a vendor finally lined up to operate the facility. Montgomery County gave official word on Tuesday of a notice of intent to award the operating contract to Tri-State Ice Management, based in Annapolis.  "We have posted an award to Tri-State," confirmed David Dise, Director of the Department of General Services.  "We will send a final exchange of documents including the standard form agreement hopefully by tomorrow, then Tri-State will sign off on the documents." Contract negotiations with two final operating competitors, Tri-State and Rink Management of Mechanicsville, Va., came to a halt earlier …
