Maryland schools were ranked the best in the nation for the fifth year in a row, according to a study released by Education Week. "Maryland public schools are so fortunate to have bipartisan support throughout the State," State Superintendent Lillian Lowery said in a statement. "Our schools have the benefit of strong support from the Governor, other elected officials, educators, parents, business leaders, and the public at large. This ranking could not be achieved without the support of every partner, and we won’t be able to continue our improvement without that broad coalition." Update, Nov. 1, 2012: The Maryland State Department of Education’s Traumatic Brain Injury/Sports Related Concussion Task Force's public hearing on traumatic brain injuries and concussions among interscholastic athletes in Maryland public schools has been rescheduled, the State Department of Education announced Wednesday. The hearing will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 5 in the state school board meeting room at 200 W. Baltimore St., in Baltimore. The rescheduling of the hearing, which was originally set for Monday, Oct. 29, is due to Hurricane Sandy. The Maryland State Department of Education is the latest state agency to jump on the Twitter train, and just in time for the back-to-school season. The @MdPublicSchools account launched Aug. 10, reminding followers of Maryland's tax-free shopping week and other notes about back-to-school preparations across the state. "Our goal is to reach parents, teachers, and the public wherever they are, in whatever format they are most comfortable with," said William Reinhard, spokesperson for MSDE. The lawsuit seeks to overturn successful petition drive.
UPDATED (3:43 p.m.)—Supporters of a bill granting in-state tuition rates to some illegal immigrants filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to overturn an effort to put the issue on the 2012 ballot. Casa De Maryland, in a statement released this morning, said the lawsuit was based on "illegalities discovered in the signatures submitted to and incorrectly validated by the Board as well as the grounds for relief." In all, opponents of the bill collected 132,071 signatures. The Maryland State Board of Elections certified that about 83 percent of those signatures—108,923— were valid.
