Graphs break down number of federal employees in each Maryland county.
The numbers here show the federal employees in Maryland by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a Washington, DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment. It compiles the data from the Office of Personnel Management, Federal Employment Statistics and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here in the Washington, DC region, county officials, including Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, have urged congressional leaders to come to compromise on the sequester. No one knows for certain what the sequestration cuts, some $85 billion, will mean exactly. Even if the March 1 federal cuts are enacted, the full effects would not be felt immediately. City's Economic Development Director: Gaithersburg is not having retention problems.
Montgomery County is struggling to retain businesses that receive economic incentives, The Washington Examiner reported Tuesday. Nearly 40 percent of businesses receiving those incentives have left Montgomery County or have closed, the report—requested by the Montgomery County Council and compiled by the county's Office of Legislative Oversight—said. The report was briefly discussed by the County Council Tuesday and is scheduled to be fully examined by the council's Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee on March 7, according to The Washington Examiner. Local politicians sound off on possibility of massive federal spending cuts.
Nearly 450,000 public and private-sector jobs could be at risk if the enormous federal spending cuts--known as sequestration--go into effect on March 1, according to a recent article in the Washington Post. County executives Rushern L. Baker III of Prince George’s and Isiah Leggett of Montgomery joined their Howard County colleague Kenneth Ulman on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, imploring Congress to come to an agreement and avert the cuts. Yesterday, Patch reported on comments made by the Prince George’s, Montgomery County and Howard County executives in a release issued by all three governments. In November 2012, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a search for real estate consultants to seek suitable locations to move the FBI’s headquarters from 935 Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest Washington to a more suburban location, including several in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Numerous locations have been mentioned for the federal law enforcement agency, according to a recent article in the Washington Business Journal. Montgomery County legislators approved Tuesday a ban of smoking on most county-owned or county-leased property.
Need a cigarette break? Better be careful where you go to have that smoke. The Montgomery County Council approved Tuesday a ban of smoking on most county-owned or county-leased property. The ban was approved with the following recommended amendments from the Health and Human Services Commission: The bill will allow the Director of Health and Human Services to designate outdoor smoking areas on certain county properties. “There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke,” Councilwoman Nancy M. The Silver Spring Councilwoman joins Councilmembers George Leventhal and Phil Andrews, former County Executive Doug Duncan as Democratic candidates, The Washington Examiner reported.
Montgomery County Councilwoman Valerie Ervin, of Silver Spring, announced plans to join an already crowded Democratic field for the 2014 county executive race, The Washington Examiner reported. Ervin joins County Councilmen George Leventhal (At Large) and Phil Andrews (Gaithersburg/Rockville), along with former County Executive Doug Duncan in the race, according to the report. Current County Executive Ike Leggett could still announce a run for re-election. Ervin, 55, said she'd had "serious discussions" with multiple community members, pollsters and media consultants about starting her campaign, according to the report.
