More helpful would be a chart showing causation. Who was at fault? What were the pedestrians wearing. So far, the approach appears to be a scattergun approach of blaming the drivers. Today alone I observed dozens of pedestrians cutting through moving traffic.   more ›

Are Speed Camera Tickets Just Another Cost of Driving in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties?

NBC4: Maryland drivers rack up more tickets than DC drivers.

Gas? Check. Oil? Check. GPS? Check. Speeding ticket? Check? Speed cameras seem to be multiplying in the metropolitan Washington area, and while they may be a deterrent to some drivers, others may view the charge for whizzing by one as just another cost of driving. NBC4 reported that, in 2012, Maryland had a much higher rate of repeat offenders ticketed by speed cameras than Washington, DC. “In the Maryland suburbs you’re about twice as likely to get multiple tickets,” David Marker, a senior statistician with the American Statistical Association, told NBC4. “By the time you get up to 5 or 10 tickets, you're 20 times more likely to get multiple tickets in the Maryland suburbs than in DC.” Montgomery County had the highest percentage of …

Ian: Speed cameras are only permitted in 16 states. There's nothing irrational about arguing that the proper way to enforce traffic laws is with police, as it is exclusively done in the other 34 states. When I testified to the legislature on behalf of the Maryland Drivers Alliance, I stated that we would support raising speeding fines for tickets issued by humans in school zones and allowing that…   more ›

Montgomery-Prince George's Battle Over New FBI Headquarters Likely Over

Montgomery County will reportedly throw its support behind Prince George's bid.

In late February, Patch reported that Montgomery County was one of a number of suitors seeking to host the new FBI headquarters, alongside Prince George’s County, Fairfax County, Loudon County and the District of Columbia. Montgomery County has apparently chosen not to pursue the project any longer, according to a recent piece in the Washington Business Journal. The General Services Administration told the Journal that it has received three dozen responses to its Request for Information (RFI) which is a method for gauging interest in a project, but Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker told the Journal that Montgomery County was not one of the groups that submitted a response. “Montgomery County has thrown its support to us,” …

Sequestration Could Choke Flow of Money in Silver Spring, Other Parts of Maryland

Local politicians sound off on possibility of massive federal spending cuts.

Nearly 450,000 public and private-sector jobs could be at risk if the enormous federal spending cuts--known as sequestration--go into effect on March 1, according to a recent article in the Washington Post. County executives Rushern L. Baker III of Prince George’s and Isiah Leggett of Montgomery joined their Howard County colleague Kenneth Ulman on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, imploring Congress to come to an agreement and avert the cuts. Yesterday, Patch reported on comments made by the Prince George’s, Montgomery County and Howard County executives in a release issued by all three governments. Baker likened the effects of sequestration to a virus, saying, “Sequestration would feel like a cold to most of the nation, but to [Prince George's …

Could New FBI Headquarters Come to Montgomery County?

What location in Silver Spring would you pick?

In November 2012, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a search for real estate consultants to seek suitable locations to move the FBI’s headquarters from 935 Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest Washington to a more suburban location, including several in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Numerous locations have been mentioned for the federal law enforcement agency, according to a recent article in the Washington Business Journal. The story cited a Washington Post report that the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA )was considering offering the 78-acre site at the Greenbelt Metro Station. In another Washington Post story, Montgomery County’s economic development director shared that Montgomery County is …

Intensity of Flu-Like Illnesses Still High in Maryland

The brunt of the flu virus may have passed, but other strains of the virus are keeping the number of flu-like illnesses high in Maryland.

The flu strain that has been making many sick in Maryland and around the country may be peaking, but that doesn't mean it's time to cease precautions and skip the flu shot. Other strains could circulate, keeping the flu around for months. Overall, the intensity of flu-like illnesses in Maryland remains high, according to the latest Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene report for the week ending Jan. 19. The influenza virus was geographically widespread according to the last report, meaning there is flu activity throughout different regions, said David Blythe, a medical epidemiologist with the state. While the virus is difficult to predict, he said there is a possibility the flu has peaked and is headed toward a decline. Even …

Speak Out: What Would You Do On Your Last Day On Earth?

The world could end Dec. 21 if the Mayan calendar is correct.

If the Mayans are right, the world is supposed to end Dec. 21. Though many scholars have debunked the end of the world myth, across the DMV, people are throwing parties to celebrate. So we want to know, if Friday is your last day on Earth, what would you do to make it special? What's on your doomsday bucket list?

I spent my end of the world day watching the news and getting more and more depressed about the state of this country. Maybe the Mayans were on to something. Only, it won't be Dec. 21... it will be some unknown date when the chinese finally stop buying our bonds. Or take over our industries.   more ›

Maryland Reacts to Sandy Hook School Shooting

Counties across the state took measures to deal with the Newtown, CT school shooting.

Communities across Maryland have been reeling in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Some residents said they feared dropping their children off at school while others demanded action from legislators. Hyattsville Elementary School's new principal, Julia Burton, addressed her students Monday before Prince George's County schools observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, CT. "Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. And take care of the place," she told students. In Wheaton, parents reacted to the tragic news and talked about school safety in Montgomery County. Frances Frost, a contributor to the Local Voices section on Wheaton Patch, wrote in an email: "As a mom of 4…

Locals Honor Those Killed at Sandy Hook

In Montgomery and Prince George's counties, many organizations honored the victims with vigils, flags at half staff and more.

There has been an outpouring of support for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Connecticut. A candlelight vigil will be held Monday at 7 p.m. in Ijamsville, MD, the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce announced in a news release. Noelle Tate, a mother of 5- and 1-year-old girls, organized the memorial to show respect and support for the Newtown, CT, victims and their families. “I’ve been deeply affected by the tragic events that took place on Friday," Tate said in a statement. "As a mother, I weep at the thought of those children being brutally murdered while innocently going about their school day. I grieve for the parents whose pain will never subside." Westboro Baptist Church Member Says Group Will Picket Sandy Hook Elementary

The group also picketed a Prince George's County High School last year, calling it "pervert-run."

A member of Westboro Baptist Church, the group that picketed Northwestern High School in Prince George's County last year is headed for Sandy Hook Elementary School. Westboro Baptist is known for picketing funerals of soldiers and AIDS victims and now says it plans to picket Sandy Hook Elementary School, according to Examiner.com. A day after Friday's shooting in Newtown, CT, where police said 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother and then 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary, Westboro Baptist member Shirley Phelps-Roper posted a message on Twitter that the group would "sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment." On March 1, 2011, Westboro came to Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, which…

I can just imagine the greeting the Westboro Church people get from the police and other brave first responders in Newtown. Phred Phelps and his clan of fanatics, hate-mongers, and vicious, un-Christian lunatics have a special place in the contempt and disgust of real Christians and other people of faith.   more ›
