Safeway in Cloverly disposed of trash bags full of perishable items.
Even with many businesses in East Montgomery County now up and running, those dealing with perishable foods continue to take losses. At Safeway in Cloverly, dozens of trash bags could be seen near the frozen and keep-cold food sections. Shelves of baked goods, prepared food, dairy and frozen foods were bare at the grocery store, located at 15411 New Hampshire Ave. The store had no ice. United Food & Commercial Workers union calls for an early start to contract negotiations, but grocery chains won’t agree.
Negotiations for a new labor contract to cover thousands of grocery workers in Maryland have not even begun, but there are signs it will be a painful and perhaps disruptive process. Tom McNutt, president of Landover-based United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400, said the union is gearing up for a struggle with two of the biggest grocery chains in the area—Giant Foods and Safeway. The union has begun mobilizing shop stewards and union members at more than a 100 grocery stores in Maryland, Washington, DC, and northern Virginia, McNutt said. Many local residents finished up shopping Friday at local grocery and hardware stores.
The scene at Silver Spring grocery stores was pandemonium in the parking lot near major stores such as Whole Foods, Strosniders, and CVS. Finding a parking spot was difficult unless you parked in a garage and walked back with your groceries, carts were few and far between as residents rushed to pick up their last minute items. Takoma Park resident Kavita Schambery stood outside of Whole Foods with her baby waiting to get a cart so she could buy the things she needed. Earlier this morning is when she knew it was serious. " We got a call from Pepco saying to expect outages and to be prepared," said Schambery.
