Newly approved regulations for school lunches have forced schools to revamp their menu options, but a local expert talks about changing how children see healthy food.
In August of this year, Congress approved calorie limits on school lunches. Under the new regulations, cafeterias are required to serve twice as many fruits and vegetables while limiting proteins and carbohydrates. The DC-based Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting better nutrition, sponsors the Healthy School Lunch Campaign. The PCRM Healthy School Lunch Team works with school districts across the country and organizes meetings and presentations for school boards, PTAs, and student groups and its message is that the food served in school should promote the health of all children. Do schools offer enough healthy lunch options? This Montgomery County fifth-grader didn't think so.
It’s not every day you hear an 11-year-old pass up pizza and ask for more salad. But, the Gazette reports that’s exactly what Ciara Mulvihill did when she realized Oakland Terrace Elementary School, where she recently finished the fifth grade, did not offer many healthy food options. According to the Gazette, Ciara and several of her classmates began collecting “evidence,” like expired and undercooked foods, which they brought to the principal, Cheryl Pulliam. “We all noticed how we didn’t really like the school lunches and they weren’t really healthy,” Ciara told the Gazette. Food safety is a serious concern in brown bag lunches.
With less than one week to kindergarten, I’ve been keeping an eye open for lunch box ideas for Little Miss S. Her welcome packet listed the lunch menu for the first week of school and the only thing on it I know she’ll eat is the cheese pizza. Not exactly healthy. I’ve been saving all those parenting magazines with headlines that scream “10 Quick School Lunches” or “Healthy Lunches Your Kid Will Love.” I keep meaning to read the articles, but they pile up on my coffee table until Lil J knocks over a cup of milk and ruins them. It seems that I have more to worry about that what to pack in Little Miss S’s lunch box.
