Improved transportation for seniors and the county executive’s $13.9 million request to replace 60 Champion buses will be on the agenda for a Montgomery County Council committee Monday. The council’s Health and Human Services Committee and Transportation, Energy, Infrastructure and Environment Committee will hear recommendations on ways to improve mobility for Montgomery County seniors. “The work session will stress that even in a county that is considered to have very good public transportation options, those services, in many cases, are not adequate for some seniors,” reads a county news release. Many local senior citizens in Silver Spring are signing up for assistance with grocery shopping.
Take some time out of your day to assist a local senior citizen. Who? The Senior Connection located at 3950 Ferrara Drive in Silver Spring. What? Tasks include escorting a senior to the grocery, assisting with reading product labels, reaching stock, handling carts and putting away groceries, or shopping for a home-bound senior from their list and putting groceries away upon return. When? Volunteers should be willing to make a year-long commitment to shop every week or two. Why? Grocery shopping is an easy and convenient way to make a big impact on the quality of a senior’s life. With temperatures expected to remain in the upper 90s through the weekend, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is reminding Marylanders that seniors are particularly vulnerable to hyperthermia - heat-related illnesses including heat exhaustion and heat stroke - caused by long periods of intense heat and humidity exposure. Heat Exhaustion Common symptoms of heat exhaustion include feeling thirsty, feeling giddy, weak or uncoordinated. County’s budget woes finally touch programs for local seniors.
Since opening in 2000, Silver Spring’s Gwendolyn Coffield Community Center has offered bingo, guest speakers, arts and crafts, informational speakers, games, music, exercise classes, health screenings and more as a part of their “Gwendolyn Coffield Seniors” programming.
