Shepherd's Table Expands Food Program With Weekend Brunch

The Silver Spring-based nonprofit was recently awarded a grant from Bank of America to support brunch.

With the help of a grant, a Silver Spring nonprofit working to provide meals to homeless and hungry people in Montgomery County is expanding its food program to include brunch. Shepherd's Table, which has provided meals to people in need for 29 years, recently began The Thierry Musel Brunch Program, serving brunch each Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. Bank of America announced that it awarded the organization a one-time $10,000 grant to help support the program.  Shepherd's Table also provides a nightly meal each evening from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Bank of America extended grants to 12 other nonprofits in the Washington, DC area, the company said in a release.

Report: Fillmore Silver Spring Made 2,000 Pounds of Food on Thanksgiving

The concert venue held its first "Giving Thanks" lunch for people in need.

The Fillmore Silver Spring served up a tall order for Thanksgiving—2,000 pounds of classic Thanksgiving fare for people in need, according to ABC7.  The concert venue announced that it would host a special holiday lunch and asked for donations of food and clothes, which they bundled and sent home with the guests. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett volunteered, ABC7 reported.  “This is the first event and I predict it will only get bigger and better as we move,” said Leggett. Chefs worked for two days to cook dozens of turkeys and bake 60 pies, ABC7 reported. Any leftover turkey, stuffing and pie was donated to Silver Spring-based nonprofit Shepherd's Table.  "The Fillmore Silver Spring is all about bringing music to the people of …

Nonprofit Continues to Serve Meals to Homeless in Hurricane Sandy

“We’ve never, ever missed a meal in 29 years,” said Executive Director Jacki Coyle.

Double-digit wind gusts, flood warnings and an increasingly dim power grid didn’t deter workers and one dedicated volunteer from serving a hot dinner to homeless men and women in Silver Spring Monday evening. Shepherd’s Table, a resource center for people without homes in downtown Silver Spring, opened its doors Oct.29, day one of what is predicted to be a multiple-day, freakishly powerful storm—just as the nonprofit has done every night for nearly 30 years. “We serve a meal seven nights a week,” Executive Director Jacki Coyle explained. “We’ve never, ever missed a meal.” Everything there is to know about Hurricane Sandy in Silver Spring and Burtonsville. Most nights, Coyle’s staff of employees and volunteers serve up meals to 140 to 160 …

Discovery Communications Performs Annual Day of Volunteering in Silver Spring

Shepherd’s Table and Jesup Blair Park benefit from employees' efforts.

Last year, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Discovery Channel, Discovery Communications, Inc. (DCI) created the “Annual Day of Volunteering,” where all 1,100 employees are given the day off to perform volunteering acts in the community. This year, dozens of volunteers worked in Silver Spring, beautifying Jesup Blair Park and helping out at Shepherd’s Table. Eileen O’Neill, president of Discovery Channel and TLC, who was helping to spread mulch at Jesup Blair Park really enjoys the annual event. "[I] Love being out of the office, and being able to make a difference in our own community—that’s really cool." Approximately 40 employees were weeding, spreading mulch with wheelbarrows and pitchforks and picking up trash. …
