Washington, DC government is looking for companies to transform the former military hospital into a mixed-use development, according to the Washington Business Journal.
The government of the District of Columbia is moving forward with plans to redevelop 67 acres of Walter Reed, former Army medical center, according to a report from the Washington Business Journal. Walter Reed is just south of Silver Spring, in the upper Northwest neighborhood of Shepherd Park. The District envisions a plan for townhomes, condos and apartments along with retail and office space that will cost about $640 million. A request for qualifications was issued, which invites development companies to the first stage of what will be a lengthy process to award the contract. Councilmembers from Montgomery County and the District took note of issues affecting residents on both sides of the county line.
Silver Spring's boom, growth, "upside potential" or, whatever you want to call the population's explosion, is ticking off some residents of Shepherd Park, a neighborhood in Northwest DC that borders Montgomery County, news outlets reported. A meeting with councilmembers from Montgomery County and the District will discuss issues affecting both jurisdictions.
With downtown Silver Spring just a hop, skip and short ride on the 70 bus from Washington, DC, there are bound to be issues that jointly affect both jurisdictions. Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin (D-Dist 5) plans to meet with District Councilmember Muriel Bowser tonight, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Shepherd Park neighborhood, just south of Silver Spring, to discuss those things. Mimi X, I was in the meeting the other night. There was no "us and them". Your politicians even said that parking was available. but people don't want to pay. Sorry, but we cannot be inconvenienced.
