Silver Spring's new library will have more than just a zip code in common with one of Montgomery County's last big construction projects in the area—it will have the same builder. The county's general services department announced Wednesday that Columbia, MD-based Costello Construction, the firm behind the Silver Spring Civic Building, was chosen to construct the new facility. Costello was one of nine companies pre-approved by the government to make a bid for the project, Patch reported in July. The Silver Spring Library building, located at the corner of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street, will be five stories high and 90,000-square-feet. The library will occupy the third, fourth and fifth floors of the facility. The county wants to lease …

The Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board is lobbying for an "intergenerational facility," the Washington Post reports.
What do you want to see in the old Silver Spring library building, once a new library opens at Fenton Street and Wayne Avenue? The Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board wants to turn the building into an "intergenerational facility," the Washington Post reports. “The community has said that we really want an intergeneration center [at the library],” Evan Glass, chair of the advisory board, told the Post. “We want a place where youth can hang out and where seniors can go while they age in place — and we’re pretty adamant about that becoming the community rec center.” Read more at the Washington Post. The new library broke ground in August 2010. The second phase of building construction, which will take approximately 22 months, is expected…

Libraries in Montgomery County are at the center of communities, and they are often high-tech places for learning, socializing and research. Aging libraries are giving way to modern representations of communities committed to education and intellectual endeavor. There's been a lot going on with library developments in the county. The construction company set to build the new Silver Spring Library—costing about $60 million—will be announced in fall 2012, according to Director of General Services David Dise. Currently the library’s final designs are under permit review, a two-month process. While the documents are under review for approval the county is able to prequalify construction companies. “A request for proposals is [issued] for …
Library is scheduled to open in November 2014.
Although a new construction company hasn’t been chosen for the $60 million Silver Spring Library project, nine companies have been prequalified to make a bid. The Montgomery County Department General Services Office of Procurement reviewed the background and experience of the following companies that submitted expressions of interest on the project: The Donohoe Companies, Clark Construction Group, Costello Construction, Hess Construction & Engineering Services, Morgan-Keller, Dustin Construction, Coakley & Williams Construction, and Grunley Construction Co. The companies won’t be able to make a bid until after the library’s final design is approved, Director of General Services David Dise said. “Once we have [the] permits we issue an …

The library is on schedule to open in 2014.
The construction company set to build the new Silver Spring Library—costing about $60 million—will be announced Fall 2012, according to Director of General Services David Dise. Currently the library’s final designs are under permit review, a two-month process. While the documents are under review for approval the county is able to prequalify construction companies. “A request for proposals is [issued] for proposals or applications from any contractor that’s interested in being considered to construct the project. This is the first stage of a two-stage selection process,” Dise said. During this stage county officials are reviewing the background and experience of the various contractors that have submitted their interest to the project. …

The total project costs about $60 million.
The future Silver Spring Library—located on Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street—is scheduled to open in November 2014, about six months behind schedule, according to David Dise, director of the Montgomery County department of general services. The library’s delayed opening is due to changes in the structural designs, Dise said. “Originally, we were going to have six or even seven floors [but] we reduced a couple of floors as a cost control issue and we realized they weren’t really needed,” Dise said. For more greater Silver Spring development news, 'like' Colesville Patch on Facebook. A few other changes that prolonged the opening date included building adjustments to accommodate the future track plan for the Purple Line project and making …
