Apartment Complex Breaks Ground at Old Second Ave Post Office Site

A 310-unit luxury complex will feature 39 affordable apartments.

More than 300 new apartments units are under construction in downtown Silver Spring on the site of the former Second Avenue Post Office. Fenwick Station, a project of Arlington, VA-based Insight Property Group and Chevy Chase-based Nova-Habitat, broke ground Tuesday with the promise of a six-story, 310 unit environmentally efficient building in the middle of downtown Silver Spring. Apartment Complex Replaces Second Avenue Post Office

The site location for the apartment complex was settled early February.

The Silver Spring Post Office—located on 8616 Second Ave.—is slated to be developed into a 310-unit apartment complex by McLean-based Insight Property Group and partner Nova-Habitat. A construction proposal outlines plans to start building the $75 million apartment complex towards the end of of 2012, according to Sarah Davidson, a partner at Insight. Davidson said the property will be a gateway to the Silver Spring Central Business District (SSCB) and will be blocks away from convenient transportation. “Our residents will ride on Metro and walk to restaurants, entertainment and major downtown employers,” she added. @ Resident 11:53 am on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 : Not only is the 16th street strip mall extremely pedestrian UNfriendly, all but the BlockBuster ....I disagree. There are crosswalks at 16th/georgia, 16th/spring, 16th/e w highway. Additionally there is a 'pedestrian zone ahead' warning @ 16th/lyttonsville for those jaywalkers from the 8600 condos and jaywalkers from the mall.   more ›

Customers Shocked by Closure of Silver Spring Post Office

Customers at the USPS Office on Second Avenue aren't happy about the news of the closing of the location later this year.

The news of the closing of the United States Post Office Silver Spring Main Office Location on Second Avenue shocked customers Tuesday as they were underwhelmed by alternative options. “I think that is awful,” said Sherry Swain, who visits the office once a month and has lived in Silver Spring for 30 years. “This is convenient for us who live in Woodside Park,” said Swain. Despite an official USPS press release explaining their location is under review, officials confirm the location is closing and relocating. The other USPS location in downtown Silver Spring at 8455 Colesville Road a few blocks away from the closing location, but customers said the amount of traffic at the other location makes it too difficult to park. “I’ll miss it. …
