20 Local Businesses Make Second Round of InvestMaryland Challenge

Competition offers grants and services to life science and high tech companies.

Several companies across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties have made it to the second round of the InvestMaryland Challenge, a competition in which start-up companies can win a portion of $300,000 in grants and/or business services. Of the 250 companies that initially applied to the competition, 71 were selected to advance to the second round, with 20 in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. In the second round, the entrants’ business plans will be reviewed and judged with semi-finalists announced Feb. 19, and the Governor’s Cup Award Ceremony on April 15. Prizes include such things as mentorship programs, strategic consulting services, product development services, incubator space, accelerator programs and small business …

Since 1917, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America have been selling baked goods to raise funds to support local community service projects, maintain Girl Scout camps, develop programs and provide financial support to girls in need. Last year, in the Washington, DC, area alone, more than 4.5 million boxes of cookies were sold. While scouts still sell cookies door-to-door, the Girl Scouts have gone high-tech in the last few years, offering the "Cookie Club" website—which allows scouts to sell cookies via email—and launching the Girl Scout Cookie Locator app so that one is never more than a few clicks away from one's favorite cookies: So, we want to know, what is your favorite Girl Scout Cookie, and why?

This week, fresh juice takes center plate: One Meat: Amy Waldman, the owner of Bethesda's Purée Artisan Juice Bar that opened about a year ago, has launched a home delivery service—and with it a vegan commercial kitchen based in Kensington, Potomac Patch reported. The home delivery service of the fresh, raw juices (useful for those going on a juice fast) required additional production space. Finding no commercial kitchen space for rent that was suitable for vegan, raw food production, Waldman opened up her own commercial kitchen. First off, nobody is forcing you to eat that burger. Second, even if you want to eat that sort of thing, it's fine to eat on occasion, and not every week. Third. . . it's catering to the audience. In England, you have a good sized Indian and Pakistani population, many of whom are vegetarian. Also, there isn't a lot of land to raise beef, so it's insanely expensive there. Mid-December Opening Likely for Range

Celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio's latest restaurant—once slated to open in mid-September—likely will open in a few weeks at the Chevy Chase Pavilion.

Good news for fans of celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio: His much-anticipated new restaurant Range could be opening in just a few weeks in Friendship Heights, The Washington Post reported. While the restaurant's opening date is not yet set, patrons may reserve a spot for a "pop-in preview" on Dec. 15, 16 or 17, The Post reported. (Make reservations via the restaurant's website.) The restaurant once was scheduled to open in mid-September, but that date was pushed back to mid-November, Voltaggio’s publicist Melissa McCart told Bethesda Magazine in August. Some businesses that closed their doors Monday because of the hurricane conditions are reopening Tuesday.

UPDATE, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 9:30 a.m.: Westfield Wheaton has confirmed that mall small stores and restaurants will open at 11 a.m. Anchor stores will open at their regular times, according to a Twitter update. LA Fitness is not open as of 9 a.m. UPDATE, Monday, Oct. 29, 8:50 p.m.: The Limerick Pub is reopening Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. for a "post-Sandy party" with pumpkin carving and food specials.
