Choices, Choices: Springbrook PTA Wants Answers from School Board

Parents at Springbrook High will introduce a resolution that presses for more transparency and equity in the high school choice program.

Fewer eighth grade students in the Northeast Consortium of Montgomery County Schools choose to attend Springbrook High School than its counterparts -- Blake and Paint Branch – resulting in a loss of resources, according to the school’s PTA. Springbrook parents Wednesday night appealed to representatives from other PTAs in the consortium to adopt a resolution to urge the county Board of Education to revamp how the choice process in the consortium is implemented. The choice program allows eighth grade students living within the Northeast Consortium bounds to choose between three high schools based on their interests, regardless of their home school. Springbrook Students Compete for Innovation Award

Two groups of students at Springbrook High are finalists in the World Series of Innovation.

“Have any trouble remembering facts and dates?” asks the marketing profile for “Flashback,” an idea for a smartphone application that allows users to travel through time and participate in history. The app would bring history to the user, perhaps eliminating the need to remember as much specific historical knowledge. Perfect for teens, right? "Flashback," along with another idea for a mobile app called "iWheelDrive," were created by students Springbrook High School, under the tutelage of computer science teacher Pat Yongpradit, for the World Series of Innovation, a national contest that awards three finalists with $2,500 for their school. “iWheelDrive” is an app that the Advanced Placement Computer Programming class submitted. Springbrook Hosts 10th Annual Music and Jazz Camp

Springbrook High’s music department kept busy this summer. The music department hosted its 10th annual summer institute instrumental music and jazz workshop for middle and high school students in Montgomery County. “I’ve enjoyed getting to play solos and encouraging other students,” incoming sophomore Dominic Ellis said.   The music and jazz workshop was held Monday, June 20 through Friday, June 24 at the high school. The week-long program was designed to build fundamental music concepts in performance techniques, jazz improvisation, music theory and music history. The students also had the opportunity to learn more about musicians who play the same instrument as they do, which helps to show that anybody can play jazz, said instructors. …
