Grease: Springbrook High Produces First Play in Three Years

“We have to put on a good performance to prove to people that Springbrook can do this arts program,” said Zoe Braddock, who plays Sandy.

High school theater productions are marked by an air of excitement, hope and anxiety; of students stepping outside their comfort zones to prove to their parents, friends, teachers and themselves that they can handle the stage pressures, remember their lines and become their roles. The pressure ante, already sky-high, is raised even higher for Springbrook High School this year as the students put on Grease, the first musical the school’s produced in three years. “We have to put on a good performance to prove to people that Springbrook can do this arts program,” said Zoe Braddock, who plays the wholesome Sandy. For the past three years Springbrook’s lacked a theater department and teacher. That was until Adrienne D’Orazio arrived this year, …

Scholarship for Springbrook Grads Honors Late Silver Spring Mother

The Anne Swaminathan College Scholarship is open to students who demonstrate financial need and academic achievement.

Anne Swaminathan, late Silver Spring therapist, mother of two and namesake of a scholarship exclusively for students at Springbrook High, was intelligent, fierce, candid and curious, according to her friend and neighbor Leslie O’Flahavan.  When her friend died last May after battling cancer, O’Flahavan knew a college scholarship would be the best way to remember the woman that she so admired.  “She believed in personal strength and personal goal-setting and so honoring her with a scholarship that bears her name makes sense because she believes that people can draw on their own personal strength to make a great life and she would have wanted to support a teenager that way,” said O’Flahavan of Swaminathan. The Anne Swaminathan College …

Springbrook Women in Tech: Club Encourages Tech Careers for Girls

The club and similar ones at other Maryland schools are part of a nationwide effort to convince more young women to pursue STEM fields--science, technology, engineering and math.

By Jamie Lee for Capital News Service Classroom F209 at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring came alive as teams of girls tried to create the tallest structure possible using only uncooked spaghetti, masking tape and a marshmallow. As they worked during a recent school day, the young women jumped from discussing engineering strategy to weekend plans at the mall. The students are part of SWIT, Springbrook Women in Technology, a club that meets during lunch to foster friendships and help prepare young women for careers in technology. “The reason we started this club was to encourage the women in the school to stay in the technology field,” said Diana Yavetz, a teacher’s assistant who helps with the club.  “Most students come in the ninth…

WATCH: Springbrook Students Design Phone Apps for Pay

WUSA9 reports on computer technology students selling apps on the Microsoft store.

The students of Springbrook High's computer science program are a pretty accomplished group as it is—last year four students traveled to Seattle to present a computer game at Microsoft's Imagine Cup competition.  Now, some students in Pat Yongpradit's technology classes have been profiled by WUSA9 for creating smart phone applications.  "It's an app product that uses GPS to track the [school] bus to tell you exactly when it's going to be at your stop," Isaac Gracealny, a 10th grader, explained to WUSA9. "It's also going to help you find your bus stop because you know sometimes you get lost, and hopefully it's going to solve the problem of having to wait too long or coming too late." Head to WUSA9's website to see a video of the students in…
