SHA: Stay Off the Roads Early Thursday

Icy conditions could occur at the onset of the morning rush hour.

The Maryland State Highway Administration strongly urges motorists to avoid traveling early Thursday morning, especially before dawn. "Stay off the roads early [Thursday] morning, so that SHA crews have the opportunity to proactively treat roadways before morning rush hour," SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a news release. "When you step out and see ice on your doorstep, you can assume that roads will be icy as well. Also remember that conditions can change rapidly within just a few miles, and we ask motorists to remain on guard and exercise extreme caution tonight and tomorrow morning." The SHA warns that those traveling during inclement weather and poor conditions pose a threat to themselves, first responders and other drivers…

Northbound New Hampshire Avenue Ramp to Beltway Reopened

State Highway Administration closed the ramp in late April to repair the bridge.

Today's work commute might be easier than it has been in weeks. The northbound New Hampshire Avenue ramp to I-495 reopened Wednesday, the Maryland State Highway Administration announced.  The ramp closed in late April so that repairs could be made to the bridge. All of the repairs are not done and lane closures and lane shifts on the Beltway will continue temporarily during off-peak hours.  SHA spent $1.2 million to replace existing driving surface, pave and resurface connections to the bridge and apply new pavement markings.  Crews will continue work to remove a demolition shield on the bridge, install scaffolding on the bridge over the Beltway, clean and paint existing steel beams underneath the bridge and restore exterior bridge …

Widow, Family Members of Injured Workers Plead for Safer Driving in Highway Work Zones

Twelve highway employees have been killed while repairing Maryland roads in the last 10 years. National Work Zone Awareness Week kicked off today with stories of preventable worker injuries.

Laurie Moser’s husband, Rick, worked with the State Highway Administration (SHA) in Maryland for 21 years, repairing roads and making highways safe for motorists, even while putting himself in precarious proximity to passing cars. Moser knew Rick’s profession was dangerous but she never expected to hear that a speeding driver had killed her husband on a summer day, June 26, 2007.  “[I worried] mostly in the winter,” she said Monday. “Never in my life did I dream it would be a clear summer day that I would receive this news.” While her husband worked to clear debris from a state road, a Chevrolet 3500 truck crossed the shoulder of the lane and barreled into Rick at a speed of 60 mph, five miles above the posted limit.
