Studio Plaza Plans Move Forward But Public Space Questions Linger

A public park on the proposed mixed-use development raised questions about the use and availability of public spaces.

Not having a clearly defined sense of what can and cannot be done on public spaces held up Thursday's Planning Board discussion of Studio Plaza, a mixed-used development that will bring more housing, retail and office space to downtown Silver Spring.  The first phase of the project by Robert Hillerson and Michael, LLC includes more than 400 apartment units and 10,500 square feet of retail space. It was eventually approved by the commissioners with the caveat that if a more specific definition of how public spaces should be used is created, the developer will comply. Reports: Revised Studio Plaza Plans Get Nods

The Gazette newspaper reports that a plans for a mixed-use development took community concerns into account.

Plans for a slew of housing, space for offices and retail shops and a small park open to the public were generally well-received at a meeting Thursday for the Studio Plaza development in downtown Silver Spring, the Gazette newspaper reported.  A representative from development company Robert Hillerson and Michael, LLC rolled out a plan that they said took prior community input into account.  Studio Plaza will occupy part of the block that is bounded by Thayer Avenue and Silver Spring Avenue to the north and south and Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street to the east and west.  Chair of the Urban District Advisory Committee Ernest Bland told the newspaper that he wrote to county officials about his concern for safety of walkways and that the …
