Thanksgiving is a favorite foodie holiday for many reasons, one of which is that big turkey. The bird not only feeds a table-full on the actual day, but it keeps on giving in the form of leftovers. What once seemed an afterthought, the leftover menu now is loaded with possibilities. After carving every possible shred of meat of our bird, I always like to make turkey soup. But those chunks of succulent light and dark meat also have the potential for some more creative comfort food, such as pot pies. Washington, DC, will have the fifth worst traffic congestion on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, according to a Huffington Post report. In the DC region, rush hour will peak Wednesday between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., according to the report. Travel will take 30 percent longer than usual on average. Black Friday shoppers will be clogging the roads as well. On Friday, traffic across the country is expected to peak between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., according to the report. Even though it feels like Thanksgiving sneaked up out of nowhere this year, there is a lot that I am thankful for.
You guys, I don't want to freak you out or anything, but Thanksgiving is two days from now. I know. How did that happen?! Just thinking about it makes me a little panicky and sweaty. The end of November kind of sneaked up on me this year, although I don't know how. Leaves have been turning orange for weeks now, and my kids keep bringing home creative writing assignments that start with "I am thankful for..." What did I think this was for? Election Day? I think maybe I was thrown off by all the Christmas decorations that went up November 1, making me think that it was already December. See when big-box retailers plan to open doors after Thanksgiving.
We may need to come up with a new name for the evening after Thanksgiving dinner. That's when the Silver Spring Target and White Oak Sears plan to open doors for Black Friday. “We heard from our guests that they look forward to kicking off their holiday shopping with deal-hunting on Thanksgiving night,” Kathee Tesija, executive vice president for merchandising at Target, told Today.com. Manna Food Center—Montgomery County's largest food distribution center—is lending a helping hand to more than 300 families in need during Thanksgiving week. The Gaithersburg-based food center will provide 70 pounds of emergency food assistance and donated turkeys to the community, Manna announced Wednesday. Community members can drop off turkey donations to Manna, located at 9311 Gaither Road in Gaithersburg, before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, and they will be passed out to families in need. Montgomery County families facing hard times and a rapidly approaching holiday season need help, organizers of nonprofit A Wider Circle told local news outlets. The organization was chosen as the county's partner in the annual Holiday Giving Project, which pairs faith-based, nonprofit and government sponsors with people in need by zip code. This year, organizers told the Gazette newspaper that two zip codes in Silver Spring, one zip code in Wheaton and one zip code in Aspen Hill are still without a sponsor, a week before Thanksgiving. The Montgomery County Volunteer Center is seeking donations to help create Thanksgiving baskets for county residents in need. Items sought include: Donations will be accepted at A Wider Circle, located at 9159 Brookeville Rd. in Silver Spring, Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. between Nov. 1 and 20, 2012. Catholic Charities of DC is looking to help feed low-income Montgomery County residents this Thanksgiving.
