Plan Created to Bring Blairs Apartment 'Into This Century' With Redevelopment

The Tower Companies will double the number of units and reconfigure retail and green space over the next two decades.

It's hard to imagine a downtown Silver Spring without the Silver Spring Metrorail station. But that neighborhood—suburban and car-oriented—was what birthed The Blairs, a 1400-unit collection of apartment buildings situated between Eastern Avenue and East-West Highway. Patch reported last December that The Tower Companies, which owns the apartment building, was creating a 15- to 20-year redevelopment plan. No Immediate Plans for the Parking Lot at The Blairs

The parent company is looking to redevelop the site, but a public park may be far in the future.

The Blairs, a residential and commercial development on East-West Highway, might be home to a public park in the future, but any plans are still premlinary, according to a representative from the development's parent company.  Reports surfaced earlier in the month that part of the parking lot of Giant grocery store might become green space, but John Marcolin, planner coordinator/urban designer for Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, told Patch that no formal plans have been submitted to his department.  The parking lot was one of 13 sites studied as part of the planning department's Silver Spring Green Space Guidelines, a supplement to the Silver Spring Sector Plan. The Blairs Gets Charged Up for Electric Cars

Recently, the company that manages The Blairs used a State of Maryland grant to install charging stations for electric vehicles. The Silver Spring apartment building is one of the few places in Montgomery County to have the cutting-edge equipment – there are additional outlets in Rockville. According to The Gazette as many as 80 stations are expected to be in operation at various locations throughout the state by the end of the summer.   David Borchardt, the Chief Sustainability Officer for The Tower Cos.
