A dating-auction website claims that more than 2,500 men in the DC area already have done so.
Valentine's Day can be challenging for people with sweethearts. Trying to figure out the perfect gift can really be stressful. For singles, the day can be even more difficult, but a dating website with a twist aims to boil it all down to something just about everyone can understand—a straight monetary exchange. Apparently, it's a pretty attractive proposition in the DC area. WhatsYourPrice.com recently released the results of a study of singles that found that 369,282 men nationally made offers for first dates in the month leading up to Valentine's Day, with nearly 2,700 of them in the DC region. WhatsYourPrice.com starts out like most other dating sites—a participant uploads a photo and a personal profile. Where it differs is in the "…

Dinner at a dimly-lit local restaurant. A bouquet of red roses and a heart-shaped box of chocolates. An intimate home cooked meal for two by candlelight. While the "old stand-bys" can offer a nice time on Valentine's Day, what if you are single, are trying to diet and don't want the chocolate or just feel like you're stuck in a rut? Shake things up this year and try one of these alternatives to the traditional Valentine's Day activities: Brookside Gardens in Wheaton will host a Singles' Campfire on Friday, February 8 from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. Singles aged 35-50 can enjoy hot cider and engage in ice-breakers, warm-up and some nature-themed games around a blazing campfire. The AFI in Silver Spring is featuring a series of great movie romances …
Nineteenth-century love letters and modern sweet tweets prove that communication for couples is timeless.
By Allison Goldstein, Capital News Service When U.S. Navy Surgeon David Shelton Edwards was serving at the Washington Navy Yard in the late 1830s, he kept the spark in his marriage alive by writing eight love letters home to his wife, Harriet Eliza Henry. "Your letters are a sweet cordial to this loving heart of yours, for there can be no substitute for them until I have your own dear self here," Edwards wrote in a July 1835 note to Henry. Over a 13-year span from 1835 to 1848 working in Washington, Pensacola Navy Yard, FL, and aboard several Mexican-American War naval vessels, Edwards wrote his “dearest Eliza” more than 40 notes now part of the National Postal Museum’s collection of thousands of letters in Washington. Today, Skype and …

A few restaurants with great food and nice ambiance for V-Day.
Typically, Italian food, with its abundance of rosey coloring and natural compliment to red wines, rules for romantic occasions like Valentine's Day. If you're willing to step outside of your comfort zone, though, there are a variety of ethnic restaurants in Silver Spring with great ambiance for an extra special date night. This pleasant Burmese restaurant will have flavors similar to that of Chinese, Indian and Thai dishes. But this Silver Spring haunt with a planned expansion into the District is really famous for its ShweJi dessert, which was named as one of "26 Reasons to Love Washington," by Washingtonian magazine. It's a cake made of coconut, raisins and Cream of Wheat and the owner said it was influenced by an Indian dish. Best of …

Customers at the Qdoba restaurant can get free food on Tuesday, if they don't mind a little PDA. The nationwide chain is bringing back a Valentine's Day promotion that, according to spokeswoman Ashley Cohen, tens of thousands of customers took advantage of in 2011. Anyone who buys an entree can get another for free—once they kiss a fellow customer at the cash register. It doesn't matter (to Qdoba) who it is. No coupon is necessary. The promotion is happening nationwide (though in Wisconsin, inexplicably, the second entree is 50 percent off, not free). The Qdoba on Tech Road is open normal hours, from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., on Valentine's Day.

By Madeline Marshall for Capital News Service The best restaurants are booked weeks in advance of Valentine's Day as sweethearts look forward to being wined and dined on the most romantic night of the year. But there is one group of lovers who won't be at the table -- the chefs. "If you work in a restaurant you end up hating it because you have to pull a double day," said Yannick Cam, chef and owner of Bistro Provence in Bethesda. Cam will spend 17 hours preparing and cooking classical French cuisine on Valentine's Day. His wife of nearly 14 years, Susana, will be beside him managing the mob of customers that come in. "The situation that we're in, it's very difficult for us to really enjoy it," Susana Cam said. They, like most chefs, will …
