A number of local businesses are saluting veterans, military service men and women and their families this Veterans Day by offering local discounts, specials and promotions. On Monday, Nov. 12, Metro trains will run on a Saturday schedule, and Metrobuses will run on a "Saturday Supplemental" schedule.
Red Line trains will single track this weekend between Grosvenor and Friendship Heights to allow for rail and fastener renewal, as well as for tunnel leak repairs, Metro reported on its website. "Throughout the weekend, trains will operate every 20 minutes between Shady Grove and Glenmont. Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, additional trains will operate between Friendship Heights and Glenmont, resulting in service an average of every 10 minutes between those stations," Metro added. Metro advised passengers traveling through the work zone to allow about 10 minutes of additional travel time. On Veterans Day, the Riderwood retirement community of veterans from the U.S. Navy, Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard rallied for peace. They were joined by their spouses--who kept their families together on the home front during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War--and by their fellow residents. The hour-long ceremony included tributes to all branches of the military as well as anecdotal stories of life in the military.

Discovery Communications expands their ‘Discover Your Skills’ public affairs job skills program with resources and programs to support veterans in locating and accessing the training and resources to translate their military skills and experience into civilian job opportunities. The veterans-focused initiative includes new training and resource information specifically for veterans on Discover Your Skills website, as well as on-air public service announcements on the Military Channel, featuring Lou Diamond Phillips of Military Channel’s Officer and a Movie, to direct viewers to the new resources. Updated, 11:31 a.m.: For the dedication of Veterans' Plaza, soldiers who fought in Desert Storm, Vietnam War, World War II and many more wars were present for the ceremony. County Executive Isiah Leggett, Councilmember Valerie Ervin (D-Dist. 5) along with numerous county and state officials helped to proclaim Nov. 11 Veteran's Day for the county. After the proclamation, day-long programs highlighted not only the celebration's theme of Native American Veterans, but some other often-overlooked groups like Buffalo Soldiers and Army Nurses. Thunderous drums emanated from the Silver Spring Civic Center's main auditorium as the Clayton Old Elk and Aspen Hill Drum provided the soundtrack to a series of Native American dances honoring veterans…
