Police Chase Through White Oak Ends With Carjacking, Injures Drivers and Officers

Glenn V. Rhodes, 34, was charged with carjacking, assault and resisting arrest

A police chase that ended with a carjacking in Rockville injured two police officers and sent one unsuspecting motorist to the hospital on Wednesday, according to the statement of charges filed in Montgomery County District Court. Glenn V. Rhodes, 34, who has no fixed address, was charged with carjacking, assault and resisting arrest. The charges stem from a string of incidents that began with a traffic stop in the White Oak neighborhood of Silver Spring, the court records show. Police said they tried to stop Rhodes at an off ramp on Columbia Pike after they discovered the car he was driving had stolen tags. But he refused to stop and turned left onto Randolph Road, police said in the statement of charges. As he drove on, police said, …

New Elementary School, Less Traffic and More Transit: Plans for White Oak Move Forward

A study of the White Oak and Hillandale neighborhoods reveal residents grappling with more traffic than the average Montgomery County resident.

Visions for a more connected and less congested White Oak neighborhood head to the Montgomery County Planning Board Thursday where staff members will present recommendations from the White Oak Science Gateway Master Plan. A two-year study of the neighborhood kicked off in February 2011.  The 104-page staff draft analyzes land use and transit patterns within the plan area, a swath of East Montgomery County that covers about 3,000 acres and is bounded to the north by Cherry Hill Road; to the south by I-495/Capital Beltway; to the east by Prince George's County and to the west by the Northwest Branch Stream Valley Park.  The study of the neighborhood found: In an effort to ease congestion and better use the available collection of retail and …

Good planning - build new interchanges (which I like) to make Route 29 even busier further south with the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit lanes to make our rush hour even worse (which I don't like).   more ›

Man Identified in White Oak Shooting

Police are offering an award of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of two suspects allegedly involved in the homicide.

Montgomery County police have identified the 21-year-old man who was killed inside his White Oak apartment Friday afternoon. Detectives from the department's Major Crimes Division continue to investigate the death of Jesse Patrick Campos, of the 11400 block of July Drive. According to police, Campos was shot inside his apartment around 3:45 p.m. Friday and died at the scene. A police investigation revealed that two suspects tried to get into the residence by forcing a roommate to open the door. After the suspects gained entry, they shot Campos and fled the scene, police said, leaving the male roommate and another adult female uninjured inside. Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Major Crimes …

Third District Police Station in White Oak to Break Ground July 18

Officers should move into the new station by late fall 2013, officials said.

Groundbreaking on the White Oak building that will house Montgomery County Police's 3rd District is set for July 18, according to a spokesperson for the county. The district, which polices the entire Route 29 corridor from downtown Silver Spring to Burtonsville, is currently headquartered in downtown Silver Spring. The new headquarters will be built near the center of the district, in White Oak, at the intersection of Milestone Drive and New Hampshire Avenue.   East Silver Spring residents have advocated for the old 3rd District station, at 801 Sligo Ave., to become an arts center.  Mount Airy-based contractors Keller Brothers, Inc. began preparing the nearly 33,000-square foot plot in May. The building is expected to be ready for …

Excited to see the old site re-purposed. Hope it doesn't just remain a bland, white building surrounded by a sea of parking. If it does end up as an arts center, they really, really need to make the facade and lawn pop - large sculptures on the front grounds, building painted uniquely or cover in art, etc. Don't just let it sit there with no one knowing what's inside!   more ›

Meeting Preview: White Oak Master Plan to Present Ideas

Preliminary recommendations for transit, land use and zoning will be presented to the public tonight.

A vision for a science corridor in White Oak, aided by the consolidation of the Food and Drug Administration's headquarters and the move of Washington Adventist Hospital, is moving forward.  Staff from Montgomery County's planning department will present preliminary recommendations for the White Oak Science Gateway Master Plan at a meeting of the plan's citizens advisory committee tonight, June 19, at 7 p.m.  Transportation became a major focus of the county's planning efforts in the area and the recommendations will include ideas for transit and the area's road network, in addition to land use and zoning.  The meeting will be held at the planning department's headquarters at 8787 Georgia Ave. A community meeting will be held next week to …

LOOK: Sneak Peek at White Oak Community Recreation Center

The 33,000-square foot facility is the largest recreation center in the county.

First thing's first: White Oak Community Recreation Center, Montgomery County's newest project from the recreation department, is huge. It's 33,000-square feet to be exact, making it the largest recreation facility in the county.  About 15 years in the making, plans for the center have been on the books since the '90s, said Judy Stiles, spokesperson for the department. Wanting to accomodate the many young families situated in the multi-family housing in White Oak, late Councilmember Marilyn Praisner recommended the area be home to a community center. Situated on April Lane, a thousand feet or so from Route 29, the location was chosen so that kids would not have to cross the busy intersection, said Stiles.  The building is currently LEED …

Residents Call for Arts Center After Police Station Moves to White Oak

The estimated cost of renovating the space in Silver Spring is $750,000, according to organizers.

When the Third District police station—located at 801 Sligo Ave.—vacates next year, East Silver Spring residents are advocating that an arts center should take the station's place instead of a new housing project. The station will be relocating to White Oak, near the intersection of Route 29 and New Hampshire Avenue. In 2009, the police station’s move was announced. Shortly after Karen Roper, an East Silver Spring Civic Association board member, started her campaign for a community space that would be useful for artists, according a Greater Greater Washington report. The Gateway Arts Center (GAC), spearheaded by Roper and local architects, would serve as a community space for artists who need it. A petition in support of the arts center is…

Saving Turtles: Rescue Group Searches Future White Oak Police Station

Before construction crews start on the station, a group of turtle advocates wants to make sure the slow-moving wildlife are safe.

A dense pocket of forested land teeming with wildlife sits so close to the busy intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Columbia Pike in White Oak that cars can be heard whizzing by from the land's perimeter.  In a little over a year, the thick canopy of trees will be replaced with a new base for Montgomery County Police's 3rd District. Construction for the station was supposed to begin in May and crews have already begun clearing the nearly 33,000 square feet plot. Before any major construction work began, however, Puller Lanigan, who lives near the site, wanted to be sure some of the area's least-adaptable residents were protected.  She pulled together dozens of neighbors and wildlife enthusiasts from other parts of the region to look …

White Oak Community Center to Open June 23

A pair of community meetings are planned in advance of the opening.

After years of planning and construction, the White Oak Community Recreation Center will open to the public in June, said Judy Stiles, spokesperson for Montgomery County's department of recreation. The 33,000-square foot center at 1700 April Lane will include a gym, exercise room, kitchen, lounge for seniors, a game room, conference room, offices and a multi-use athletic court. The facility cost the county about $24.3 million.  Calverton-based Grimm and Parker, the architectural firm behind the East County Community Center and partially behind The Music Center at Strathmore, designed the center.  A dedication ceremony is planned for June 23 at 11 a.m. Ahead of the center's opening, recreation staff will hold two public meetings to discuss …

White Oak Police Station to Begin Construction in May

Montgomery County's 3rd District police will move from downtown Silver Spring to White Oak by late 2013.

Come mid-May, White Oak's long-anticipated police station will begin construction, residents learned from a county official at Wednesday's North White Oak Civic Association meeting.  The intersection of Milestone Drive and New Hampshire Avenue will officially become the new home of Montgomery County Police's 3rd District by late fall 2013, according to Don Scheuerman, Jr., project management chief in the county's department of general services.  The 3rd District station is currently located in downtown Silver Spring. The department's 3rd District services the eastern portion of Montgomery County from downtown Silver Spring to Burtonsville.  Other quick facts from the meeting: For more information about the project, visit the department of …
