Supporters, Senators Rally Ahead of Gov's Wind Energy Testimony

Even as supporters rally in front of the State House, Governor O'Malley begins another push to get the legislature to approve his offshore wind energy plan. P

By Haley Bull for Capital News Service Supporters and senators for Governor Martin O'Malley's wind energy act rallied in support of the legislation ahead of the governor's testimony before the Senate Finance Committee. His package would create a 200 mega watt wind farm at least 10 miles off the coast of Ocean City.

Maryland lawmakers are preparing to resume debate on one of Gov. Martin O'Malley's major green initiatives, an offshore wind energy bill that stalled during the last legislative session.

Martin O'Malley's major green initiatives, an offshore wind energy bill that stalled during the last legislative session amid concerns about the cost to utility companies and their customers. The bill would have subsidized the construction of between 80 and 200 wind turbines 12 miles off the coast of Ocean City by obligating the state's four investor-owned utilities—Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., Allegheny Power, Delmarva Power and Pepco—to buy offshore wind energy for 25 years. We have example after example of large scale wind farm failures, yet our failure of a governor pursues this strategy when faced with a $1 billion budget shortfall.
