New Luxury Apartment Complex With Historic Buildings Opens in Silver Spring

The new apartment and town-home complex incorporates two historic buildings.

The new Heritage at Silver Spring luxury apartment complex is about to open at 8021 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring.

Its ribbon-cutting ceremony is Thursday, and apartments already are listed online, costing between $1,712 and $3,134 for studios and one-bedroom apartments, according to Trulia.com.

The nine-story building incorporates two buildings from the historic National Association of Dyers and Cleaners (NADC) headquarters built in 1927.

"This is the first renovation of an historical site into a luxury, class A apartment community in Downtown Silver Spring," according to a news release from the office of County Executive Isiah Leggett, who will attend Thursday's ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"The familiar golden brick buildings on Georgia Avenue, with yellow and green terra cotta roofs, were designed by renowned master architect—and Washington, DC, resident—Arthur B. Heaton (1875-1951). The two structures reflect his love of Colonial architecture and of the Mediterranean," the news release added.

In 1927, after a national search for a site for the NADC Headquarters, ground was broken for the original buildings, which "served as a permanent school, research laboratory and model dry cleaning plant. In October 1927, the school opened to students from 22 states and the District of Columbia—30 men and two women. At the same time, the association provided the public with dry cleaning services until the mid-1970s. The buildings were later named National Dry Cleaning Institute," the news release continued.

Now, there are more than 200 apartment and two-level townhouse units on the renovated property, which also has a swimming pool, 24-hour fitness center, business center, lounge and virtual golf simulator, according to the building's website.
