Piece of Silver Spring's History Returned

Recently a piece of our community's history...all 93 pounds of it...was returned to Silver Spring!  Formerly in the possession of the Brunswick (MD) Heritage Museum, this cast iron SILVER SPRING sign was originally mounted onto a 1.5 inch diameter post.

It is theorized that the sign was positioned parallel to the single Baltimore & Ohio Railroad “Metropolitan Branch” track bed that ran through Silver Spring up until the late 1880s/early 1890s when double tracks commenced to be laid from Washington to Gaithersburg.

The sign will be eventually be displayed in Silver Spring's 1945 B & O Railroad Station (8100 Georgia Avenue). If anyone has additional information on this sign, or knows of any others B&O RR signs like it, please contact McCoy at 301.537.1253 or sshistory@yahoo.com
